Need to top off oil on my LR3 at 1500 miles. Either was not full upon delivery or burned a little during break-in. LR dealer stated it came with Castrol 5w30 synthetic blend from the factory. Can anyone else confirm this? Thanks for the help.

Yes, that's what is supposed to be there in North America.

Actually, the factory oil is GTX (non-synthetic) 5w30. If it came from the factory with synthetic blend, you must be special.

Yeah, that is what I thought also - that it comes from factory with GTX. Never did actually speak to service directly. I left a voice mail and then they left a voice mail answering my question. My guess is they thought I was talking about what oil they use during their reg sched oil services, although I was pretty clear in asking what it comes with from the factory.

Whuups, you are right. I just saw "Castrol" in your message quickly and didn't see the "blend" part. It's just supposed to be Castrol dino oil.

In regards to what the dealer uses for "free" service... it depends on the dealer.

Hmmm...my dealer told me that they are using Castrol synthetic blend. Nevertheless, that crap is coming out and a full synthetic will be going in ASAP.

Thanks for reminding me to do this!

I agree with Airboss. I don't know about 7,500 miles on conventional oil (even if it holds 8 quarts), especially since I pull a trailer. I changed to Mobil 1 5-30 @ 3,700 miles. I'll let the dealer do it for free at 7,500. Speaking of which, does anybody know where to get a cap-style oil filter wrench that has the right number of dimples? I have a drawer full of them and one from a Ford and one from a Porsche are the right size but different number of dimples, so I had to use a universal claw type. Since you get a torque setting on the filter it would be nice to be able to use a cap-style wrench with a torque wrench going back on.
PS - kudos to Land Rover for putting the filter in a convenient place, easy to get to, right up front on the oil cooler...
Cheers

I actually haven't changed mine yet (just using the free service for now). Is it a pain to take off the skid plates and such to change the oil?

(don't have any fancy torque tools. Just your basic toolbox that has worked for minor maintenance on other vehicles...oil, plugs, filters, tire rotation, nothing too technical).

Both the Jag 4.2l V-8 and the LR3 4.4l V-8 (basically the same engine, the LR3's being bored out a bit) use the Fram PH9010 filter. Find a wrench that fits that filter and you'll be on your way.

Todd-
The whole thing is easy, all you need is 13mm & 10 mm sockets and an oil filter wrench. There's actually 2 skid plates to take off and the big one under the engine was surprisingly heavy to me, maybe 10 lbs. Although I shouldn't be surprised since the beast weighs 5400lbs! The hardest part would be getting under it, although I guess a set of ramps would be all you need.
Airboss - thanks for the tip on the filter!
