Rear diff is damp

When I was repainting the undercarriage on my LR3, I noticed the rear diff was damp. The damp area went about halfway up the visable part of it. Could it be the pinion seal? Or what else could it be?

What is the history on your rear diff? Has it been serviced (fluid) recently? Is it making any unusual noises? When was the last time you drove the car on wet roads; could it just be water?

No noises...haven't seen rain for a month and not sure, I'll check the records.

Just checked the records...no diff services. Got 75k on it now.

Well it's due for a fluid change anyway...might as well have them change the fluid and check the seals for leaks.

If the vent became plugged it might contribute to the leak. When you change the fluid, pay attention to rust contamination and metal flakes, and a pressure release (related to the vent) the pressure is mainly an issue on the front, there is a TSB on it.

The case itself is sealed with a reusable larger rubber o-ring.

The fluid should be changed every 25k or so.

Ok....will do. Where is the vent/breather on it? I'd assume it's up a bit.

Is it still safe to drive for another week or two until I have time to look into it? Replacing upper control arms/ball joints on the Jeep this weekend if the parts come on time.

It should be safe to drive. You need to be the judge if it is just seeping, or how bad it is leaking. The vent connects to the diff case, and then terminates in the body behind the gas fill with all the other fuel lines in there.

The vent connection on the diff is on the top, near the end of the e-diff motor if you have one. It is about 1" long pipe with a ****** that a rubber hose fits over.

****-tastic pics I know, but here are a few observations I made.
1. The diff isn't too "oily", but as shown the intermediate shafts are.
2. The crossmember in front of the spare tire was damp.
3. Some wires/hoses above the diff were damp
4. The "oily" substance seemed more like water, but it was light brown in color and didn't feel slick like the diff oil I remember. Diff oil also had a distinct smell too- didn't really smell it. Didn't put any up to my nose though.

This leaves me with a few questions:
1. Is it likely the intermediate shaft seals are leaking (it's interesting to me that both are equally damp)
2. Is their something above that could be leaking (AC condenser or something) and is mixing with dirt and crap to create the substance? (Or is that wishful thinking?)
