Has anyone removed the rear muffler and replaced it with a straight pipe in hopes of a mild preformance gain? If so what was the outcome? Noise isn't a concern...

The rear muffler as you put it is nothing more than a resonator, removing it or even changing the muffler will not provide any performance gains.
Having done a Cold Air Intake and serious Exhaust work I can say that it was sadly a waste of effort for the money spent. I did have the ECU remapped, but not sure it was truly worth the gains when you consider all the cost per horse power that I did gain.
