Anybody know anything about a recall notice on 2005-2006 LR3 and RRS vehicles regarding the "airbag wiring to the rotary complex?" I just got a call from my dealer saying it's a voluntary thing and I'm guessing it can wait until next service.

P045 relates to the rotary coupler (under the airbag) on RRS and LR3, should take like 1/2 hour to do. DUE to a failure to a safety system, this is a recall, meaning it is mandated by the NHTSA.
Q041 applies to all 03-05 Full-Size RR and is a pinion coupler and driveshaft replacement. This is a Service Action, meaning it is not required by NHTSA.
I don't have the Vin breaks here, I'm on time off, but if I remember right it was LR3 thru 2006 somewhere. LRNA has plenty of stock, it is up to your dealer to have the parts available for you. The cars are safe, if a failure should occur, the system will illuminate the SRS light and depower the drivers airbag. Do not be afraid to drive the car.
If nothing else, you can call the dealer, and they should have the info. I would put it up, but my bike is calling.
I will update this tommorrow.

Thanks for the info guys. I just had the car in for service about a month ago. Sucks I just missed it. Sounds like something that can wait. I have an early 05, so I'm definitely on the list.

Safety Recall P045 - Rotary Coupler Wiring Fracture

AFFECTED VEHICLES
A total of 37,117 vehicles in the USA are involved in this Recall action.
LR3 (LA) VIN: 5A309377 - 6A376425
Model Year: 2005 - 2006
Range Rover Sport (LS) VIN: 6A900290 - 6A939919
Model Year: 2006
DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT
On vehicles within the above VIN ranges, an issue has been identified due to the relative motion between the steering column rotary coupler (clockspring) and the steering wheel hub. The wiring that connects the clockspring to the driver's airbag module may fracture due to this relative motion.
AFFECT ON VEHICLE OPERATION
Relative motion between the steering wheel hub and / or the steering column cowl with the clockspring, which includes the driver airbag circuitry, could result in fracturing of the airbag wiring connection. If an airbag wire fractures, the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster. The SRS warning light indicates to the driver that there is a concern with the SRS in the vehicle and that immediate repair is necessary.
If the SRS warning light is ignored and a vehicle accident of sufficient severity to command deployment of the driver's airbag occurs, the airbag module may not deploy in the intended manner. The condition may result in the deployment of only one stage of the dual-stage driver's airbag or the airbag may not deploy at all. No other SRS functionality is affected by this condition.
SERVICE PROGRAM
Retailers will be instructed to insert two 1mm spacers between the lower left-hand side of the column switch mounting point and the column lock to improve the alignment of the column switch. Two foam pads will also be fitted to the top of the steering column switchgear to provide assured clearance between the cowl and the clockspring face. Retailers are instructed to inspect the clockspring drive peg sleeve and, if necessary, replace it with the current ribbed design. There will be no charge to owners for this
service.

I hope that this helps.

My car is currently at the dealer -- I don't have my VIN # with me, but I took possession of my 2005 LR3 on Dec. 4, 2004. I just took the car in for an airbag light being on. The dealer is telling me that the clockspring broke, but that it is not the recall problem--so I need to pay $500. Seems fishy to me. Thoughts?

Let them know that the NHTSA is very interested in hearing about airbag failures and you would appreciate a "good will" repair of this item, considering the safety issue it creates.

Honestly, I can't believe they wouldn't address it under the P045 recall. Sounds like they are trying to make up for lost sales revenue by charging customers $500 for known issues, but maybe I'm being too cynical.

I also own a 2005 LR3 and had the clockspring replaced a while back due to being noisy. This was before the recall notice.

Hey TRM,

Check this document: http://nhthqnwws112.odi.nhtsa.dot.g...s/Public/Recalls/2008/V/RCRIT-08V248-1996.pdf

CUSTOMER REIMBURSEMENT PROCESS:
If a customer indicates that they have previously paid for a replacement of the rotary coupler for this defect (vehicle out of warranty), a copy of the repair invoice must be produced as proof of the repair. The Retailer must directly reimburse the customer and a claim for recovery of this cost should be made using the related damage procedure.

I think you have your answer...

Well, my dealer point blank refused to do the work without my promise to pay. And, I unfortunately work too much to be more actively involved in the debate. And, I didn't want to chance my wife driving around with a bad airbag. So, I guess I have to take it up with higher powers at LR after the fact. The dealer's argument, FYI, is basically that the clockspring broke, not the wire running to it--so it is not covered. Also, they have suggested my car was built BEFORE the recall.
