I've read on RR forums that replacing the BIG resonator with 2 straight pipes makes a world of difference in terms of performance sound. This is resonator number 8 in the drawing below.

Anyone do this and, if so, what were your experiences?

Yes, I had mine (#8) cut out and replaced with SS pipes on my 06' 4.4L. The sound is great and doesn't sound like your exhaust is rusted out with holes everywhere. I know Bushway did this on his LR4 and has posted a video or two on here where you can hear it. Different engine, but sounds very similar to our LR3. Still pretty quiet with the rumble at idle... but awesome when you stomp on it and through the RPM ranges. I went to a local weld shop and it cost $60.. more attractive than the $1200 Magnaflow cat-back and it sounds better in my opinion.

Its been a while now and haven't had any negatives such as back pressure or anything.
Let us know what you end up doing!

Any effect on emissions or the ability to pass DEQ tests?

That's a good question...now that I live in FL and not PA, it wasn't a concern for me as we don't have emissions or inspections. I wouldn't think that it would fail...but worth checking with your local shop first. I have the muffler in the garage just in case we moved back or somewhere that had emission testing or inspections..

I would think any mods after the cats would have little effect on emissions.

Chopped out #8 also. Sounds great. Just a warning that it is pretty loud... I can definitely see it being too loud for some. Not sure on emissions either since FL doesn't have inspections. Be sure to post up some videos after you do it!

I'm in Jacksonville now Bushway...you?

I can't see much harm with mods after the cat as you mentioned kilkenny.

I don't mind loud, I mind drone. I won't do it if there's a drone at highway speed. I've heard there isn't.

Is #8 a resonator or is it a muffler?

By the way, very cool LR4. Love the sound.

I don't get this. You buy a luxury vehicle that is one of the most quite SUVs you can find, then you hack it up and make it sound like some redneck in a chevy.

It isn't a race car, fyi. To each his own I guess.
