Does anyone else own a Land Rover that rides and shifts great in the first three gears and once it automatically shifts into 4th the truck rides terrible. Terrible meaning the rpm's fall down after shifting causing a minor studder, when you take you foot off the gas it jerks and the rpm's never go down like they do in the other four gears, when you hit the gas hard in 4th their is a loud clunk. Well I had my truck checked out for all of the abover in all parts including the transmission and motor and all sensors and all was said to be working great. Is this normal riding in 4th gear and does anyone else have a rover that rides liekthis? Thanks!

if you are talking right around 50 mph, then it would be the torque converter

I had all that checked out from two different places, one being a land rover dealership and another a private import garage. I was wondering if it is normal for the truck to ride bad in 4th gear, this sputtering problem is driving me nuts and I did everything I can to try to fix it and it never goes away. Please help!!!

I have pretty much the same issue. It's not usually a violent clunk, but it does happen. I deal with it. Good to know it's the torque converter, though. I've asked around, and seems to be a common thing.....

I have had my plug wires and plugs changed and my next step is my vehicle speed sensor since I have read in many posts here and on other websites that this will cause 4th gear to act really strange in different conditions. Was wondering if anyone here knows what types of symptoms this would be beside sputtering in which the vehicle speed sensor would cause if it were going bad. Thanks for the help.

VSS going bad will be one of the following conditions:

Speed "O" Meter not reading, or bouncing

Over 50 mph, the vehicle will feel like it is stalling (if you drop it in 3rd gear and it goes away, then VSS if not fuel pump)

VSS will also cause the Cruise control not to hold a steady speed

If i drop it into 3rd gear it still sputters under load, my cruise works and my speedometer is working fine, guess my problem will never be solved then!

hesitation...

I'm going throught the same thing right now. These are things that I've heard:

Fuel Filter
Plug wires
VSS
valve job
fuel pump
clogged injector
U-joint

I can't find my culprit either and it is most definately driving me crazy. Filter, plug wires, plugs, VSS and cleaning out the injector are all relatively easy fixes and you should probably just do them anyway. I've heard of using seafoam (which i know nothing about...but 1/3 can in the gas, 1/3 can in the oil, and 1/3 in the intake is what I keep hearing). Even the u-joint is pretty easy, but usually if that is failing, you will definately know it (loud noises). Just for the hell of it, i'm buying another fuel filter this weekend and cleaning out the injectors. Let me know if any of these fix your car and anyone w/ any other ideas definately leave suggestions!!!
Thanks

Will do, also if my VSS was bad or going would it make the check engine light turn on? Just asking because mine is not on.
