Yesterday the service engine light kicked on in my '99 Disco II. After looking at the vitals and finding nothing, I thought about the gas cap (since I am in Dallas and it was 108 outside). It had come lose a little bit so I tightened it up and turned the light off by unhooking the battery for a few minutes. After that it ran without the light for 15-20 miles and 3 or 4 restarts. This afternoon the light popped on again. I talked to the dealer here in Dallas and they said that the computer needs to be reset still. Is there anyway that I can do this A) to find out of it was the gas cap and B) not pay the dealer for something simple if that is all it is?

Thanks

You could always go to a local auto parts store--NAPA, AutoZone, Kragen, and see if they can run the codes for you. That would get you started in the right direction. I know there are issues with vapors getting out of the gas tank on hot days, dont know if that would be affecting the light/cap at all though...

The Gas cap could very well be causing the issue. Or a possible clogged vent tube. LR are known for this little issue.

Have the codes read or buy an OBDII code reader for the cost of having the codes read at the dealer and you can check things any time you want.

I had the codes read this morning at Auto Zone and it was P0161 which I was told is the O2 sensor. The vehicle has 107K miles on it. Do I replace the sensors or is it a problem that the sensors detect?

Well, you can replace the sensor, or just erase the codes. I get odd codes like that every once in awhile. O2 sensor running rich, or lean, or I get evaporative valve flow incorrect, but they never recur. So, I just chalk it up to having wonky electronics and not a real issue. If I had the same code coming up over and over then I would deal with it....That is just what I do, I am sure its not a good idea, but that is just my choice....

Thanks. It turned off after several cycles. I'm going to leave it be unless it becomes a recurring problems. I appreciate the help.

'03 Disco II Service Engine Light

Hi ... I have the my service enginee soon light (amber) came on. Took it to Autozone and got a P0442 error code (Emission Control System Leak (Small)). Light came on conveniently after the warranty expired. Replaced the gas cap, however, light still on. How long before the light resets or can I manually reset to verify if it was really the gas cap or something else?

Thanks for your help.

Doesn't the "Service Engine" light have to be reset manually? It came on for me at 85,000 miles. Following Joey's and others' instructions, I removed the appropriate relay from behind the passenger side floor panel and reset it by inserting the end of a paper clip into the hole under the sticker on the relay.

Joey also said that you can simply unplug it to shut off the light.

The service engine on a D1 is the emisions, on a D2 it is the same as our (D1) check engine.
