Hey, I have a 1997 D1 SE, and this has happened to me once in the last six weeks of owning it...my problem was that the pump kept trying its auto-shutoff even though the tank was not full, and it would seep gasoline out the top where the nozzle enters the tank..not much but still seeping enough. So I tried to do it manually, so the auto-shutoff would not interfere, and the pump just kept pushing gasoline out of the tank filler. So I drove around to the pump on the otherside, and voila, problem solved. I dont know what was up, whether my tank was being angry at me, or if the pump I was using was bad. It was almost like a huge backpressure in the fuel tank was forcing the pump to think it was full and forcing gasoline out, but it is wierd that the pump on the other side worked fine...........
Long story short, try a different pump or even station, who knows, maybe your stations pumps are hating you right now. It is worth a shot, if not, then you should let your dealer know it really does not matter if your VIN is part of the recall, but your tank is defective, and I am sure Land Rover would like to avoid a nice lawsuit down the road
