Snow chains

Thanks a lot guys was up in Lake Arrowhead, CA on a little holiday getaway and it got pretty close to needing chains even with 4x4.

The LR Genuine chains are the RUDmatic Classic V - often referred to as "German RUDs" - and are about the same price from independents as from LR (approx $700+ for pair).

The other RUDs that purportedly fit 255/55R19s are the Grip 4x4 and way cheaper, but it's not clear if the Grip 4x4 variety fit differently than the RUDmatic Classic V, and I'm sure that they would not be warrantied by LR if you managed to rip some suspension parts off.

What is cool are these... no worries with clearance here, because they don't attach on the inside of the tire.

Rud Chains

FWIW...

I contacted RUD USA (...rudchain.com) back in 2006 when I first got the LR3 (2006, SE, with 18" wheels). Had a fair amount of discussion back and forth regarding the correct chain for the LR3 with 18"s (dealt with Sandra but don't know if she's still there).

Per the US RUD specs, the GRIP part #0141 was the right answer. I paid something around $150.

Now I've "dry mounted" these but never used them in anger. Maybe the next 5+" storm we have, I'll try them around the neighborhood just to confirm clearance etc. Again, I took RUD's word for these being corrected.

As a side note...I've had the LR out during a 10" storm and had no problem (I'm in CO). Also, did the LR experience back in '06 and the instructor didn't want to be quoted but did confirm that although LR reco's on the front axle (steering advantage), they could be mounted on the rear or on both...

Note that there was a guy online that was selling chain packages for the LR (I'd have to go find the link - I think it was the Bill Burke site, just google him) and they were the RUD 0141's and he had a bunch of satisfied customers. He only sold in sets of 2 pair and I just couldn't see the need (I'd rather wait it out if it's that bad)...

I am looking at getting the 285-60-18 general at2 and was wondering if I could run the low profile cable type chains if I stay in off road height. I can run the modified sensor arms for added height. I will only be using them on the trail. Mich law is fairly picky on the use of chains fo on a paved road.

I haven't tried it, but I have to think the 285's are too wide. There is so little clearance between the sidewall and the upper control arm knuckle!

BTW: I noticed that the current US accessory catalogue available at the dealer (not the older online version) now includes the Spikes Spiders plus a whole bunch of previously only european bling.

I think the Z6 and Z8 models need even less clearance and do fit that tire size, at least the Z6 does which only needs 6mm clearance.

I have a set and they fit well on my 265/65/18 tires, I havent had to use them in action just fitted them and drove around the parking lot to check clearance.

The seem to be fine on the rear in normal height. On the front there is just no clearance between the sidewall and upper control arm for anything.

Only thing that looks like it could work on the front is the rud spikes spider above.
