My 98' Disco I has a few problems.

First of all the horn, cruise, and SRS light. I replaced some dryrotted hose on the cruise system but it still doesn't work.

Also at times while driving the Rover wants to act like it is not getting fuel. It won't respond to the accellerator. Then it comes back around and runs fine for a while. Weird.

Also when I lock the doors with the drivers door a popping sound comes from the passenger front door and then the doors all either lock or unlock. It works ok but the popping sound worries me.

One more: The rear differential or whatever it is ( the shaft between the wheels ) has grease all over it. Makes me think it has a leak but the grease is pretty caked and old. Should I have the fluid changed or just not mess with it. The Disco has 135,000 miles on it. I don't want this part to seize up on me but I also don't want to cause a problem.

First things first.

SRS light can only be reset or turned of by either a dealer (LR) or someone with the TESTbook software

Horn, check fuse, then check horn connections.
Cruise could still be a vacuum issue unless the light on the dash is not on.
Act like it isn't getting fuel would be a VSS issue (Vehicle Speed Sensor) normal. Change it.

Door locks... the driver door lock needs lubed bad before you have to replace it.

Rear diff, if you mean the big thing in the center of the axle i.e. pumpkin between the rear wheel, then at least check the fluid level or have it checked. It is probably low if it has stopped leaking.

Hope and pray that it is the VSS that is causing your engine feathering issue because if you have a clacking exhaust valve(s) (not uncommon on these 4.00 litre V8's) then you are eventually looking at a valve/head overhaul - see Robison on Rovers #2, Feb 20, 2000 pdf (Robison Service)

without sounding like a complete idiot. I am going to have to ask how to lube the drivers door lock and also where is the VSS located? I have attempted removing the door trims on other vehicles and caused some serious damage.

Thanks for the Help.

Thanks so much for all your input. I am currently in the process of buying a VSS. The site on your link has one for 89.99 and I plan I will order one from them in a few weeks.

I noted a posting from a few years back that said something about a coupler in the stearing column that effects the horn, srs,& cruise do you know where that would be? would I need to remove anything other than the fuse panel door to access it? I removed the fuse panel door and couldn't find anything like what was described.
