In the D4 Owners Hand book it says to wait 10 minutes with the ignition off before checking and to check it when hot. It also says when filling to wait 5 minutes for the new level to register and to leave the ignition on

Checking the oil level

Check the oil level weekly when the engine is
hot and with the vehicle resting on level
ground.
Note: Switch off the engine and let the vehicle
stand for ten minutes to allow the oil to drain
back into the sump. Do not start the engine.
The oil level can be viewed in the message
centre when the ignition is on, the engine
stopped and the transmission in Park (P).
Note: The system will not give a reading until
the oil level has stabilised.

Topping up the oil

1. With the ignition on, but the engine not
running, unscrew the oil filler cap.
2. Add the appropriate quantity of oil (as
indicated by the message centre oil level
display). Wait 5 minutes to let the oil level
stabilise and re-check the level.
Clean up any oil spilled during topping up.
3. Once the correct level is achieved, refit the
filler cap and securely tighten by hand.
Note: The ignition must be left on during the
top-up, so that the electronic dipstick can
register and display the new oil level. This
enables an accurate level re-check.

Exactly… but my experience is there is a difference between the 10 min wait reading and the morning reading.

And this may be the 1 millionth time I’ve said it: “Thanks for the electronic oil level reader in lieu of a dipstick… you dipstick.”

if it was the PCV valve wldnt you see a ton of white smoke from the exhaust? if i remember correctly that's what happened with mine. oh and my vacuum pump was shot. And the electronic oil display was not showing low oil!

which reads higher?

You see there are two things going on.

1) oil expansion with temp. Otherwise known as coefficient of expansion. Overall this is pretty low but overall effect depends on the shape and volume of the sump where the oil measurement is taking place. A small coefficient may produce larger level numbers if the lowest part of sump is small as little volume changes would have bigger level changes.

2) the oil level sensor likely uses capacitors. The sensor measurements are calibrated to an expected oil temperature hence the instruction regarding hot oil balanced with the 10 min wait to get everything to drain back.

Anyhow when in doubt, my rule is to follow the manual procedure since it was put in place by the people who designed the engine.

Well,
The morning reading is higher.

I was parked on a reversed incline at the country property.
The reading was down .5 qt. I rolled the vehicle forward to a level spot, (using the neutral release lever) and it gradually moved up to full.
Then reset the lever, shut the ignition off, lock vehicle, unlock, then my start procedure. (I don’t like that “transmission fault message” and want it cleared before starting the engine.

I drove North (250mi?) hitting the highest speeds ever in the LR4, and didn't making any changes and before leaving the gas station I set a timer for 10 min., checked the oil level and it was a 1/2 quart low. I pulled out to a level looking area and set a timer for 30 minutes, checked again and it was 100% full. Then when I get to camp I repeated the same procedure and had the same result even though I don't think the LR4 was on level ground.

I'm tempted to put a charger on the battery and at 10 min. leave the ignition on, top it off and check the gauge (even though the gauge screen exits on its own) at 5 mintes. Then in the morning see check again and see if it throws an overfull error. If it doesn't, then I'm driving around with low oil (but it does read OK).

White smoke is from coolant. I was googling PCV failures and still unsure, but I read if they are stuck closed then gaskets/seals start to seep and if its stuck open then it uses oil. But anyone can write anything on a web page so who knows lol.
