I know there's a few threads around about this but I can't seem to determine if its exactly the same thing I'm experiencing. It would appear that the cable on the left side of the tailgate on our LR3 is jammed. Initially it just seemed to have problems reeling back in however the tailgate would fully open and close even though the cable wouldn't reel back in completely. It would essentially just get pushed aside when closing the tailgate.

Moving forward to now, the cable won't completely extend, thus the tailgate will only open about 1/2 way. Not sure if this is the mechanism or a broken cable which seems to be common. I would assume if it were a broken cable it would be obvious but could be wrong.

Well that's encouraging. Guessing I just need to disassemble that area and see what's going on.

If it snapped, it wouldn't open at all.

I Think he is talking about the spooling cable stay on either side of the tailgate, not the cable that opens the latch.

You will need to replace the spooler stay about a $40 part from rover parts west.

Good point, never realized the cable everyone was talking about was for the actual locking mechanism.

I'll probably go ahead and order the part on blind faith as there doesn't seem to be too much more than could cause this particular problem. Need to order a Genuine Oil Filter anyways.

You can disconnect the cable stay on either side pretty easy. There is just a clip to release down at the ball on the tailgate. Release the bad one and the tailgate should drop down. You can get buy with only one side as long as you don't put anything to heavy on the disconnected side.
