I just had my alternator replaced and the mechanic said the timing cover is leaking on the alternator and killed it. He figures it'll cost $4,000-$4,500 to fix the leak if he doesn't find any other issues, such as a coolant manifold leak. I think it's a fairly slow leak and think I saw someone post about trying to use a sealant to stop the leak. Thoughts on this? I was kinda crushed by the price. If anyone has ideas for an estimate in San Francisco or surrounding, please let me know. thanks! mike

If it is a 5 liter engine, at that price he should be replacing the timing chain as well.
