you're supposed to wear them on the front, to steer. I guess rear is better than nothing if there isn't room on the front at least you can stop...

Well the tire shop seemed to think if I needed to I could run them on the rear. As long as I don't get any major articulation. Any idea why Land Rover says to only use them on the front wheels?? Seems to me that with stock tires the rear would have more clearence then the front. No chains for know...

Chains, not even the Ruds, will not fit on the front with the larger tires unless you get this type.

Low clearance ones will fit on the back but if you do any hard articulations they will rub pretty good in the front of the rear wheel well. SCC makes some good ones and the previous mentioned Rud chains.

I have some SCC low clearance ones for the back on the BFG 265/65/18.

Heck, I was afraid to run the Ruds on the the stock 255/60's. Very little room.

Thanks this is the info I was looking for. I'll look into the SCC chains. They are local company for me so would be nice to support them...

General feeling from the Solihull Society is most likely not on a 285, a 265 may squeak by, and I would still lean toward cables instead of chains.
Let us know what you do.

Necro thread.

Even at the official Land Rover Experience they were using chains only on the REARS, none on the fronts. Anyone who had chains on, including the official Rover instructors, had them on the rear.

And here at 1:57

Here at 1:45

Here at 2:47 and 3:10

This flies in the face of the factory manual that says only use them on the front. (pg 238) These are all legit official LR Experience events. What gives???

I have the RUD 4x4 chains on 265/65-18 and made them fit onto 275/65-18 as well. However, I also have a set of 25mm H&R spacers on which is what allows clearance of the front upper control arm.

You'd of course also need all the normal modifications for fitting a tire such as 32-33" so frame horns, fender liners flattened, etc.
