Tranmission filter woes

So I wasted about two hours this evening trying to replace the transmission filter. At first look, it appeared I could get the pan around the crossmember and exhaust pipes easily, so I drained the fluid and unbolted the bolts only to find out that it doesn't come out because the crossmember is in the way. Also, the hose that goes into the pan was on really really tight. I had to struggle with that for twenty minutes or so to get that off. Then started unbolting my crossmember bar, got about 3 bolts out and a lot of dust in my eyes and called it quits for the night. So I'm like 1/4 of the way done with the entire job and I got really greasy and tired. This job is unbelievably difficult. And I thought the fuel filter was in an weird location. I can't believe the disco 1's transmissions were designed like this. It's close to ridiculous. It looks like I'm going to have to take off the exhaust to get the crossmember out.... if it even comes out. I heard they are in there pretty good. Looks like a bundle of fun. I'll keep everyone udated with the results.

p.s. Could it damage the transmission leaving it empty overnight?

---------warned ya!....just dont try to turn the engine on, you should be OK...its a hell of a job, you will prolly have to end up grabbin that crossmember off, and disconnecting the y-pipes where they meet the exhaust manifold, also not easy to reach...its a monster DIY project for sure, thats why i am ready to pay my Landy mechanic! lol

As you have learned, this is one of those jobs that the service manuals fail to mention some critical details.

You will have to remove the crossmember. After unbolting it, you will need to spread the frame rails a bit. This is most easily accomplished using a portable hydraulic ram tool such as port-o-power. Since you'll be disconnecting the Ypipe from the exhaust manifold, it's a good idea to replace the gaskets so make sure you have them on hand.

(dont want to thread hi-jack, but quick question, down the exhaust system, where the y-pipes meet the mufflers, is there supposed to be a gap between the two pipes? I am guessin my o-ring or gasket there is blown off, my truck sounds almost like a diesel with so much air puffing sound...hard to explain, I know the right y-pipe sheared a bolt and lost another and theres a big exhaust leak there...so I think i have two decent leaks, would this hurt performance--speed, MPG?--alright, thanks, its loud as a ****...oh ya, I think the leaks are causin my O2 to think its runnin lean, so the truck I think is runnin rich, if i am sittin there and gun up the engine when it revs back down i get popping air sound from the y-pipe/manifold leak area...lol, im being a bad owner right now! about to take her in for a 2k brake, tranny, exhaust fix...OUCH...but i dont have the time or tools right now, just wonderin if my leaks are causin my truck to be sluggish and crappy MPG).....but ya, the gaskets are a few bux each, just hit a lot of penetrating fluid on the bolts there and when you put it back together get some anti seize cause th heat will make the bolts want to fuse to the exhaust..good luck, its a hell of a task!

I knew there was a reason I have a 5-speed, have rebuilt it myself.
After I die is when a auto trans will be in my life, not before.
May be off color but automatics suck up what little power these vehicles don't have in the first place.

True... I wish I had a manual. I miss shifting. I used to have a manual car. Anyways, the transmission filter/fluid change was a success!!! After 9 hours or so of struggling with it, I finally figured it out and it runs like a champ now. I am so stoked. Pretty complicated procedure.
