Has anyone had to replace their transfer case? I have a 2005 with 59, 000 miles that started making scraping noises so I had it towed to the dealership. The first call that I have received from them is that it's the transfer case and to be prepared for a pricey and lengthy repair. Of course I didn't get the extended coverage. Can anyone tell me what to expect?

Beg for mercy, I can't imagine it being a quick, cheap or easy fix.

It may be a job you can do if you're good with wrench turnin. Are there any good independent shops around you?

Unless you've got money burning holes in your pockets these trucks are not good to have beyond the factory warranty without some kind of extended coverage.

Good luck man, let us know how it turns out.

Maybe we should start a repair fund for those without extended warranties...

Call Land Rover North America and explain the situation. I have a feeling that the sale of LR to Tata came with some stipulations about out of warranty repairs. In addition, if it weren't for repair work at the dealerships, LRNA would surely see some of it's dealers go belly up. My '05 LR3 HSE is over 13,000 miles out of warranty and the dealer is replacing a cracked dash pad, no haggling!

Are you the original owner? Do you have all (or most) of your service work done at the dealer you bought from? Have you ever bought any accessories from their parts department? Are you a repeat customer? I can say yes to all of the above and my dealer has provided exemplary service, like the above mentioned dash replacement.

I have never bought an extended warranty and I'll keep this truck until monthly repair bills exceed the payment on a new one. Within another year or so aftermarket vendors will begin stocking all of the normal repair parts. You can buy a new transfer case online for a Discovery II, no doubt they will be available for LR3's soon.

Your T-case shouldn't have conked out so soon, follow-up with LRNA, be prepared to maybe pay the labor and resign yourself to having had some bad luck on this one item. All in all this is a very well built and engineered truck.

I have not heard about ANY transfer case failures. You aren't even supposed to think about cracking them open to change the oil until after the first 100,000 miles (or something like that).

Case continued

Thanks for the responses about my transfer case. I just received a phone message from the service department that my part still wasn't in but hopefully it would be in tomorrow. I will be calling them in the morning. I have written an inquiry to Land Rover US so we'll see what happens. I originally took my Rover to a mechanic who has worked on all of my other vehicles and who I trust completely but he didn't feel comfortable with it being such a major issue. Now I wonder if this would have been covered with an extended policy and how much I would have saved. I'm sure they will tell me. Thanks again.

2006 Transfer Case Problem

I have 72k miles on my LR3. My transfer case is also broken. The cost to repair it is 5300 for a rebuilt one versus 9000 for a new one.

Might I suggest that this is going to become a problem in more LR3s based on the prior response posted above, at 59k miles.

Land Rover America basically told me that it was my problem, and that I had to deal with it. Suffice it to say, while I have loved the handling of my LR3, these type of costs for unexpected repairs are inordinate. This will be the last Land Rover I purchase.

I would sell mine for scrap before I paid 9k for a T-case.

You'd think a $9000 transfer case should last a couple million miles wouldn't ya? FWIW, roverparts.com has one for a RR that costs $4000. With the markup and the install, I could easily believe the dealer would ask for $9000. Not to detract from the sheer ridiculousness of it going bad and LRNA continuing their tradition of zero help. Push them again though...I needed a new trans shortly after warranty expiration once and they picked up about 1/3 of it.

Well it took over 2 weeks to have the repairs completed. I was in touch with Land Rover US who took it under advisement. 2 weeks later while vacationing in Florida my suspension warning came on. It needed a new compressor which took $1200 +car rental and a week to get. I added this to my concerns with Land Rover US. I just heard yesterday from LR that they are not going to help me in any way. I guess I'll be out car shopping.....too bad...I really liked this vehicle.
