Does anyone know at what mileage it is good to replace the shocks?

What is a good shock to use when replacing them?

Thanks.

Hopefully never... On my 2006 RRS, the passenger side front shock went out at about 100,000 miles, the front driver was replaced at 160K. But I did off-road the car quite a bit and ran with fairly heavy (300 lbs) rock sliders, which I am sure didn't help wear and tear on the shocks in the long run. The rear ones were still the original shocks when I sold the car with 210K miles on. Not sure there are a lot of alternatives to OEM out there, other than Arnott which recently introduced a set of high quality front shocks compatible with LR3/4/RRS.

I just got my LR4 and trying to sort out anything that could leave me stranded in the middle of nowhere. The rig looks and feel brand new. It’s a one owner and it was taken care of. I think all highway mileage. I wonder if I should change the struts. What do you think? I was surprise to see your comment about your rear struts weren’t leaking after 210K miles. Maybe I should keep driving it since I have only highway miles on the rig. Thanks.

Airbags can leak, which is an obvious failure mode but I think it’s important not to overlook the dampers, which also wear out.

I replaced all four corners with Arnott at 140k miles on my 2006 LR3, mainly because one of the front airbags was leaking due to the rubber bladder perishing. The rear airbags were in surprisingly good condition. In both cases however, the dampers were completely and utterly shot resulting in a bouncy and harsh ride. Worn out dampers puts more stress on other suspension components and I think these rigs are all about preventative maintenance to avoid problems.

My 2011 lr4 has original front shocks. Had to replace the rears at 140k due to a bad damper on the passenger side.
I think the ride quality could be better though, and will be replacing fronts next spring.

My advice: Don't chase problems on this rig. Change the fluids at reasonable levels and address any items that pop up as they occur. They are expensive enough to maintain without going through premature replacement of components that may fail. Address the cross overs if nervous and just monitor the rest. Happy motoring.
