A lot depends on the price point and what in fact is included in the new model and also whether they have first run issues. In some ways it won't be as much of a direct competitor if it is substantially different. So in some markets (probably the mass market) the LR4 may loose out to the new, "more relevant", new model. But in other markets, the LR4 may hold its value simply because it will continue to be the only vehicle with its unique combination of capabilities which will be important to some people, but not the masses. I happen to be one of those who expects to be extremely disappointed in the new model but won't be looking for a change for a few years unless something disastrous happens to our LR4. But I'm in the minority.

These ideas of the v8 being special or the end of the lr4 design holding value are so narrow minded. This is a forum of a tiny % of buyers. We are too small to even cause any change in designs and similarly we will be the only few who care about an outgoing model.

The majority of people have no clue and just want the latest and coolest thing.

The LR4 will plummet in resale value just like Rovers always have. Aside from that, there's always a new car dealer who wants to make space for the new vehicles because more people want those and they also draw in people who might buy something else.

Sure some dealers will sit on the price of an end-of era LR4, but most will be glad to move them off their lots.

So, when you go shopping in late 2016, unless you like paying sticker, don't walk in yelling "OMG you still have an LR4, I'm so glad" ;)

I for 1 had to jump ship. Have a disco II that I still have (not running). Original owner 137k needs a new engine - future project.
Bought a 2006 LR3 as family hauler New in 2006. Awesome truck - reliable until recently (138k) where every other week it was something. Most recently instrument cluster etc plus alternator set me back $2k. I had enough and as much as I loved it, it was time. Plus my 4 kids getting bigger we needed more space. Drove the xl denali, burn, etc but got a 2016 Toyota Sequoia. Even though it's an older design, the drive and comfort is not even close in the large American suv's. The selling point was the 2nd and 3rd rows. In the sequoia 2nd row - all seats are independent fold and slide AND recline. The 3rd row reclines as well. In the Americans the 2nd row leg room is half and in the 3rd your knees approach you chin. The independent suspension is a big difference as well.
My personal drive is a 14 wrangler unlimited and come '18 I'll be curious to compare the new wrangler vs the defender

Not for me. I will stick to my 2013 LR4 till it will fall apart. All those new land rovers look alike and none on them was built for serious off roading. There is some hope in a new defender but I am curious what its msrp will be.

I personally don't dislike the Ford Explorer. Keep in mind that the new design language of Land Rover was started under Ford ownership.

Absolutely agree, my lr3 is still going strong (except for the rubbish suspension) and as I'm going to be abroad 1 year doing my MSc I was thinking of selling the 3 and buying a new Discovery when back home, but the new one seems very evoque-ish so I too will keep the LR3 until it stops running.

As for the new Defender, if they price it anywhere near Merc's Gelandenwagen I'll take an old defender and spend some $ to make it run like new instead!

It looks to me that they squared off the rear look by adding the rear extension around the window, straightened the rear windows and kept a B-Pillar between them. All of which definately reduced the soccer mom look and keeps a touch of the current look. I am actually more hopeful after seeing this revision. The rest looks very similar to the concept vehicle.

If they would allow that tailgate window to go up and down like a 4-Runner I would be all in just for my dogs! But the angle does not appear that it will to allow this to happen :(

I suppose the final look will vary based on the amount of chrome and body hardware they add on or option out. It's pretty easy to go rugged or soccer mom with just few different accents...
