With all of the discussion this issue has received in other threads, and with several posters mentioning that they have had this repair successfully performed at widely varying prices, I thought it might be useful to have a listing of shops that have performed this repair, and an approximation of the costs at each shop.

The intention would be to eventually sort these by state, so that someone in need of repair can locate a shop that has experience with the repair.

Mine is a 2012 with no symptoms yet. I did call my local dealer to get some info, and was told $6,500.00 was the approximate bill for the last one they did. That varies greatly from the $3,500ish I keep seeing posted in other thread.

So, if you have had this repair performed by an independent shop, please post the shop name, state, any contact info, and approximate pricing.

Thanks.

Good idea.

I had mine done at the local dealer. They first quoted $7,500 but they finally agreed to do it for around $4,750. I didn't have time to shop around and felt having it done at the dealer is worth a little extra (I believe it is documented in the JLRNA service records for the VIN). I really think JLRNA should do it for a more competitive price as it is essentially a poor parts specification.

We have done several here at Motorcars Ltd. in Houston, Tx.

$3800-$7300 - case-specific (though the engines may be the same there are different challenges between a RR, a LR4, super-charged - or not)

It's always lack of maintenance causing premature wear and or sludge clogging the works.

Change your oil every 5000 miles, or at least 2-3 times a year (assuming it's started/driven 4-5 days a week or more). Cheap insurance.

Extended warranties are a joke, so don't kid yourself thinking a warranty is going to bail you out of anything.

I'd love to be more of a maintenance shop but with J-LR we see far more repair work coming in than maintenance here.

Keith Hollis ... yes regular maintenance is important, are you suggesting that failure to maintain a rover 5.0 engine regularly is the cause of the faulty timing chain guide issue in these engines?

I thought the problem was a chain guide made of soft aluminum being struck by a tensioner made of hardened steel. Whereby wearing away at the aluminum timing chain guide and creating a circular void in the guide... which allows slack in the chain.

Am I misinformed?

It boils down to wear, Steve. Quality of engineering and materials utilized in the manufacture of the components.

Life of these materials will only prolonged by proper lubrication, use of appropriate lubricants, and correct service intervals.

Prolonging oil change intervals to 10K miles, or 15K miles is the reason these things fail.

I've yet to see one fail that had 2-3 oil changes/year (or changed their oil at regular 5K mile intervals like we used to say). You can go 5K as opposed to the old 3K mile standard, but don't go 7500 miles or more between oil changes without expecting an accumulation of sediment in the smaller oil passages critical to the variable valve timing system. If you do go that far, spend the extra money to perform BG Product's "Ultimate Oil Change", which is a good flush and would clean it out.

I've always found the best practice to be marking your calendar and changing the oil 3 times a year, regardless of mileage, for anyone starting one 4-5 days/week or more. It's cheap insurance when compared to these repair bills.

Raises hand.

Although I did buy my '12 at 40k miles, I changed the oil every 5 to 6k miles and just had the timing chain and guides replaced at 79k miles.

Ryan, do you have records showing when the oil changes were performed during the first 40k, along with what specific oil was used?

My theory... if the damage was already done in the first 40k, proper OCI's afterwards can't fix it. :(

I don't. I know it was a leased vehicle, originally bought at the same dealership that I bought it from. The original owner lived down in Joplin, I believe, which is a few hours south of Kansas City.

Before I bought it, the salesman emailed me some service records, including that it had the water pump replaced. I do not recall seeing any records of oil changes, but that kind of work might not have been in the documents I was sent.
