I own a 2010 LR4 with 85,000 miles on the ODO.

Few days ago I started hearing a weird sound from the engine (listen to the video attached). So naturally I scheduled time with my mechanic to have it checked out, which was scheduled for a week later.

Meanwhile, last weekend when I started the vehicle, the “low coolant” warning light came on (for the first time). I checked the coolant reservoir and the level was below the low mark. So I got some coolant from the store and topped it up.

Long story short, despite all the warnings I decided to drive the vehicle... after an hour or so of driving we had steam coming out of the engine. Pulled over immediately, popped the hood and noticed all the coolant was on the ground (and some had sprayed over the engine area).

No engine warning light etc came on. Car was still starting up etc.

Anyway, had AAA tow it to the nearest LR dealer in Cherry Hill, NJ.

... having some issues uploading the video due to its size but basically it was the Water Pump

The vehicle is now fixed, plus I got some additional stuff done since it was due for the 90k service.

Here’s the invoice break up :

Yep, my coolant was pumping out of the front water pump bearing, hitting he fan and spraying all over the inside of the engine bay. But I was still able to drive 40 mins home because I keep 2 gallons of mixed coolant ready. - Completely fill up the expansion bottle, drive until it says low coolant, stop refill and drive again until I get the warning. Make sure you change the crossover pipe as well because I found mine leaking a week after I fixed the water pump. Also, I see you are in same area. I'm out in Shamong twp.

Be glad you caught it and stopped before the engine overheated.

I think water pump noise is uncommon. To my knowledge, they mostly need to be replaced due to a leak, not a water pump failure.

At 105K miles I'm on water pump #3. Mine all had slow leaks dripping out near the front tow hook. Nothing like what happened above.

Yup, the intake hoses were also changed. See parts listed on the invoice.

I’m based in Jersey City - so it was far from home where this happened. I had extra coolant with me but since it was leaking so bad didn’t think it would have helped.

That sucks.

Meanwhile, I had a warning light back in Xmas, found the reservoir near the bottom, topped it off, and have been fine and level ever since with no trace of a leak. These coolant systems are weird.
