I have a 2012 LR4 and the rear tailgate won't open. I need to replace the actuators but need to get the hatch open first. Are there any tricks or tips besides drilling a hole on the inside panel to manually release the hatch? And if I have to drill the hole does anyone know the exact spot to hit?

Is it upper or lower gate that you can’t open?

Upper gate is the painful one.

If it’s just Lower gate (able to open upper one), there are two releases inside the gate that you can trigger with either your finger or a screwdriver.

I just replaced the actuator on my 2014 LR4. Since the hatch is closed, you have to go inside and get to the cable that the actuator pulls to release the latch. I coordinated the process with my local dealer service dept.

Use a flat bar to pry under the plastic strip on the top of the carpet covering the lower hatch and get the top edge away from the hatch enough to squeeze your hand in between. Reach down and find the cable coming out of the actuator and pull on it to release the latch. Then you can open the top and lower sections and remove the carpet - then replace the actuator. The actuator cost was $57.

Finally got both hatches open and then the replacement was easy. Works great now. Thanks for the tips guys!

To be reliable, take a little extra time and rig a manual release when you do it.

They will all fail eventually.
