Any tips on anything I could do to prep the LR before the Safelite guy arrives? I requested someone who has LR experience, but we’ll see. Guess I’ll study the repair manual today. Particularly nervous about the wipers and RV mirror unit.

Replace the plastic cowl at the base of the windshield if it is faded or no longer sits flush against the glass.

Make sure the glass installer uses new clips under the A-pillar trim pieces. If they reuse the old clips the trim will wobble and howl at higher speeds. I think the part # is LR053837. Not sure if you need 4 or 6.

Great!
It’s going pretty well but I need help with the rain sensor...looks nothing like the manual. Do I lift the plastic part over the gray tab on each side or pry the metal frame it nests in out?

Howl? It will fly off and flap around around like a loose shingle in a hurricane. I carry duct tape just for this. It seems the clips hold tight for a few years but eventually...

No need to prep. Safelite has done this on several LR4s. When I got mine done in San Diego, CA, the tech reached out to me and we had a conversation where he personally did quite a few of them and was very familiar with the process. The tech came out replaced it with Plikington glass (OEM) and installed 2 brand new OEM windshield cowls in less than 1 hour. I was definitely impressed. When I got it done a few years ago, they introduced a Chinese glass that has lifetime warranty on it. So, they'll give you the included Chinese glass option or the Plikington for a discounted rate (I think around $300).

I wouldn't worry so much, but as far as prepping, you may want to remove any devices (Fastrak, dashcams, etc...) you put on the windshield yourself. Otherwise, they know what to do.

The one time they replaced the windshield and reused the trim clips, mine was howling once I hit 60 mph. Clips were on backorder and the old clips did not hold the trim tight so the trim could wobble. As speed increased, a gap would open up between the glass and pillar trim. The wind rushing through this gap crated a loud howling/humming noise that only got louder the faster you went.

^This. They will remove and replace everything including toll transponders and stickers. Not your job to take apart anything.

If your windshield is heated, go with the Pilkington. The Chinese version (Fuyao?) has thicker heater element wires that are more noticeable.

Thanks, guys
Be glad you are living in places where you have an experienced labor force.
Standards are different in El Paso, TX. Don’t want a tech learning on my car.

Fortunately, there is one glass shop in my village that the local LR dealer sends his vehicles. As such, the guys are good at replacing the LR3/4 windscreens. They hate doing the glass roof however.

I have always had them use the Pilkington windscreen but for last years replacement they claimed they could not get one so a Chinese windscreen was installed. I even had to wait a month or so for the Chinese glass - that puzzled me.

It seems OK; the heating wires are no more visible than in the Pilkington and they work. What was different was that the blackout perimeter areas were solid black whereas on the Pilkington, the blackout areas such as around the rear view mirror are sort of a graduated black pattern with holes in it - that looks better; the solid black is a bit downscale.

Seriously?

I just had my dealer replace my windshield with an OEM one, insurance paid for it all. (AZ has no deductible on glass)

They did a very nice job, and I had them replace the pillar clips. Should have had them put on a new cowling, but I'll do that later on.
