Hey everyone, i was chatting with a rover specialist out in Long Island, New York and he explained that oil change intervals should be every 3k miles or three months on our LR4's. He said that even 5k/6 months intervals were too long for this vehicle. Apparently our engines are very prone to engine sludge since the oil filters made for our trucks don't filter oil as well as they should. I'd like to hear how often everyone changes their oils and what mileage they currently have on their truck. I don't know if i agree with a 3k/3month interval as i think that's a bit excessive, but maybe i am wrong and the rover specialist is correct. Please shed some light on this for me guys!

He is full of **** and trying to empty your wallet. The LR4 is one of the easiest vehicles to perform oil changes since it can be topsided. Yearly and 24k kms was too long but 5k/6 month intervals is just fine. Use a good synthetic and quality filter and you will be just fine.

"Rover Specialist" you got that right trained in how to rip you off. This person must have half ownership of that stealership to come up with all that ****** dribble.
For one oils are way better these days disregarding ZDDP for the flat tappet crowd. His "they don't filter oil well" what a crock, i'd change brands of filter as well install a larger one having more filtration surface area. Cross reference what will fit then select a quality name brand. Low mileage between changes is ok if you live in Alaska starting daily at -30*F or beating on it hard in the desert heat. Early oil changes were the thing back in the 50's and 60's era dealing with lower quality oils back in the day, most being non detergent.
BTW, did you happen to get a quote for his full service (your wallet) oil change? I bet he'd also short fill your engine also. Do your homework then be a DIY person so a stripped out oil plug is another thing of the past......~~=o&o>......

That's ridiculous. No need for 3k intervals. Definitely don't follow the 15k intervals. I think 5-7.5k and at least yearly with a good quality oil is fine.

See my latest Blackstone Labs report. With same oil, the quality was nearly identical after 3.8k miles as it was after 6.1k miles.

Mine: 119K miles, oil changed every 5K miles with basic Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 EP if available
Hers: 37K miles, oil changed once a year with Mobil 1 AP

Agree with the above. 5K to 7.5K intervals are perfectly fine. I get the Mahle oil filters from
Atlantic British (https://www.roverparts.com/search/oil-filter/) and buy the Mobil 1 oil in gallon size from Walmart.

Buy a Mityvac and you can easily do the oil and filter change yourself in 15 minutes. Watch this excellent video by umbertob:

Oil change intervals is out the window with several short cold starts with stop and goes in town driving. Talking 80 to 90 miles a year, yes it does happen, not to start another ******* war.

I recall several months ago like six or eight plus that the cause of the cam timing chain guide's accelerated wear and failures was caused by 5.0 LR owners not changing their oil often enough. Then it became the quality of oil used caused the failures. What's the flavor this week?

Use only helium to your tyres so your LR is now lighter increasing your MPG......~~=o&o>.....

I don't recall those discussions so recently. The conventional wisdom in this forum for at least two years is that any good oil changed frequently at ~<8k miles was what mattered. The even earlier discussions (~5 years ago) regarding the oil spec were proven to be regarding the longevity of the oil. When it was agreed that intervals should be shorter, those discussions largely went away.

As for extremely short intervals due to intense city driving, well, that's the case for any car. The OP did not specifically mention those driving conditions, so the standard advice was given. I don't see what there is to be worked up about.

And for what is worth I have yet to see any definitive evidence that oil leads to chain issues. I've read theories alluding to deteriorated oil affecting the chain tension.

I had long been a believer in the 3k oil change, but that was with conventional oils that were more prone to sludge engines. I do think the only reason your owners manual recommends 1 year or 15k miles is for marketing reasons. With full synthetic Castrol every 5k seems to work great.
