Low mile year, should I still get annual oil change? (out of warranty)

I only have driven roughly 4.5k in the last 12 months due to the pandemic. Should I still get the annual oil change? My service reminder on the dash just popped up. I have 54k on the car. My last change was at 49.5k.

I do tow about 1k of those miles.

Thanks

4.5k miles is not THAT low - especially with 1k of towing. Many here regularly change the oil at around 5k miles regardless. I change mine yearly and I've had one year with 3.5k miles. If you had said under 2k miles, I'd say maybe consider skipping.

The bigger question is, if you were to skip this one, when would you perform the oil change instead?

I'd just go ahead and change it if I were you.

I change my oil every 5K miles. What is your normal interval? You could go another 500 miles and then change it. The truck doesn’t know whether it’s been 12 months or 13.

15,000 miles as designated by the owners manual. I'm at 32% of the recommended life for fully synthetic oil. 5K would only be required if using non-synthetic, 7-10k for Semi-Synthetic. (if I had the v8 from previous years).

2016 LR4 SCV6 recommended frequency in the user manual is 15k or 12 months.

the 15k OCI is only recommend by the dealer. real life it should not go that long. regardless of SCV6 or V8.
please change your oil every 5-7k, using synthetic.

if you do shorter OCI you dont necessarily need to use the proper spec oil that LR recommends. so maybe it'll end up being the same cost in the long run?

Yeah, sure. 15k mile oil intervals. Lifetime transmission fluid. GME stock is a "sure thing."

All equally valid.

Throwing my hat into the ring here.

5k miles or every 12 months regardless. It’s cheap to do and for the sake of 30 minutes of your time....

Towing is classed as arduous usage by LR and calles for a totally different maintenance schedule.

Normally I'd say no, you don't have to change at 12 months. But 4.5k including 1k towing... either change it now, or change it soon at a convenient interval (i.e., 5k). Synthetic only, I would use semi-syn unless it was an emergency.

The OCI topic has been beaten to death on this forum, but either you missed the discussions, or don't believe the consensus that 15k is an unfunny joke. Maybe with ultra-light service only, you can get away with 15k. Any towing or city driving is considered "severe service" and the recommendation is cut in half, to 7.5k. I'd have sworn that in other parts of the world, the OCI for LR4 was 7.5k for normal service and 3.75k for severe service, but I can't locate the documentation. As I always say, oil is cheaper than engines. YMMV, etc.

About the time limit, I've never found any evidence showing why oil magically requires replacement at 12 months. On one of my cars which doesn't see a lot of miles, I pushed the OCI to 30 months and the oil analysis came back with normal results, same as it did when driven more miles and changed at ±12 months.
