The change in engine supposedly took place mid production of the 2005 LR3. If memory serves me one of the parts guys said that early 2005 production (actually made in 2004) was a BMW sourced 4.4l V8 before they switched to the Jag V8.

Now the reason we noticed this was we were looking up on the parts computer how difficult it would be to swap in a rear locker as my LR3 doesn't have one and he noticed different engine codes (both being V8's) on the parts schematics for the same year vehicle. A coworkers answer to this was the engine swap.

I'm not saying this is fact as I don't have proof to back it up but I do have a bit of experience that kinda fits in this whole scheme of things.. While my early build LR3 was in the shop getting it's second windshield I was loaned a V8 SE that had a production date of May 05. This SE drove waaayyyyy different then my HSE. The engine seemed to rev freely, throttle response was quicker, and the engine sounded less "throaty" or deeper then mine. Some of this could be attributed to the adaptive electronics in the engine and transmission ECM's but I personally am leaning towards what the parts peeps said and that they may actually have switched engines mid year.

Interesting - I know the RR switched from a BMW sourced V8 to a Jaguar sourced V8 a few years after the sale, but I always thought the LR3 came with a Jaguar V8 from the get go.

Sounds a little fishy to me, I remember researching the LR3 well before it ever came out and always recall the Jag engine. Not that it makes a difference...

Hey folks, Just wanted to say thanks for all the input. I pick up the truck (and say goodbye to my wrangler) on Friday.

Seriously, I don't know if its the tata deal or what, but if you are in the hunt for an 07 dealer LR3, they make the deal pretty irresistable right now. Even got the extended warranty thrown in.

Thanks again.

Enjoy, I'm sure you will!
Sidenote, had a loaner recently and I thought "hey this isn't too bad for a V6, a little noisier and slower but it's ok and completely fine for most everyday uses". Come to find out it was a V8!. Got a second loaner that was much much stronger than the first. Apparently all V8s aren't created equally.

The LR3 had a Jaguar based engine since day 1... even the V8 test vehicles that were floating around in North America had them. There is no way this is true.

I was waiting for you to chime in; I knew you could give the definitive answer.

Not that I would have been upset with a BMW engine, but my 3-series had the engine torn apart at 30k miles due to a vanos problem (and the transmission was torn apart three times before 30k miles and finally replaced at 35k miles). It was one of my favorite cars to drive....

when it wasn't in the shop

I have the V6, it is superbly geared, and is fantastic off road. However, the V8 makes the truck feel considerably more nimble on the road because of the extra power. compared to a Wrangler, both are WAY more powerful.

I have used a V8 LR3 for about 8,000 - 9,000 miles, and when I went back to my V6, I did not miss the V8, which surprised me and pleased me. The V6 works a little harder, but it's a solid motor.

However, if you can get the V8 at near the same cost, don't fret it, get the V8.

PS: I off road mine a LOT. Photos: http://nwoods.smugmug.com/Land Rover/198186

You can't bolt on too many accessories like you can with your Jeep, but you don't need to either.
