2001 vs. 2002 vs. 2003

I went back and forth about where to post this so if it's in the wrong place I apologize greatly.

I'm debating about a getting a used Disco and wanted to know what the differences are between 2001 2002 and 2003 models (all NAS) real nitty gritty stuff would be great. Also is there a resource out there that lists out all the options that were available? or somthing to help decipher the VIN #'s?

thats the difference between 2001-2003...then again, if you go off road you want the EARLY 2001 models, they can be modified to manuallly lock the center differential, i fyou dont care, then any year is good as those Discovery Series II models all have Electronic Traction Control.

Every SINGLE year of ANY Land Rover has insane quirks and stupid problems....BUT, none of them are impossible to fix, just hit or miss, you might have warning lights, or no problems at all...be warned, you are on a forum--people with problems come here, but how many others dont stop by becasue they are doin fine? i love my 97 Discovery 1, and even with the increased maintanence costs and attention you have to give these trucks, you will likely never look at another car the same way again....they are entirely unique and all of them rock....just look for something with out rust, without electrical issues, without broken stuff, and without an overly huge price tag, get it, and join the brotherhood

IIRC the 2003 model comes with the 4.6 engine (someone correct me if I am wrong) the other 2 come with the standard 4.0 engine... not much, but it will seem like a lot if you do any highway driving. If it were my money I would either get a 99 D1 (last of the D1's) or a 2004 Last of the D2's.

Have you ever noticed that vehicle manufacturers only remodel after all the issues have just about been solved, just to break it all over again.

I would get an 03-04, everyone will usually tell you not an 01-03 because it doesn't have a CDL, but it's not that big of a deal, it's still a Land Rover and will go off-road just fine. I have an 03 and I like the headlights and the better RR 4.6 engine over the previous years. I didn't think it was worth the extra cash getting an 04 just to have a CDL, and if mine doesn't perform to at least all the Jeeps I've owned, I'll sell it and get another Jeep.

How do I find out if I have the CDL locking mechanism?
I've remember seeing this posted before but can't seem to find it again.
Is there a way to identify this simply by the VIN?
I have an 01 I think it is an early 01 but have not confirmed when.
