My wife and I have had our LR3 now for 2+ years (She drives the LR3). The LR3 has been great, We love the car. 2 days ago while my wife was driving on the highway the car died. She said that steam came out from under the hood and went into the car, and it smelled like rotten eggs. We then had the car towed to PDX Rovers. Apparently the battery exploded. The battery is now reading 8.4vdc. This makes sense to me (6 cells in a battery @ 2.1vdc each). 2 of the cells shorted causing the battery to blow. They also said that the alternator was sending the battery too much power. that is the part i do not understand.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening?:hmpf:

Never heard of this happening on a rover... but I have heard of it happening to several other vehicles. The ECU in new vehicles control the Alternator charging, not a regulator.
