Ok, so you don’t state if it’s a 6 speed or 8 speed.
If it’s 6 Speed, your gear selector lever is likely to be seized and this doesn’t allow the cable to move position or it is stiffer than normal and can often spring back out of gear ( or in your case, not sit in Park correctly)

It’s just 13mm bolts. Use a big 21mm spanner to hold the one side whilst you undo the 13mm nut to stop the gear selector cable from bending.

You can then take it all apart and clean it up properly. Although if it’s that bad, it’s easier to just buy a new gear selector lever kit and replace. Make sure you use some copper grease or similar on it when you put it all back together.

If it’s the 8 speed, then that’s electronically controlled. Most issues from the 8 speed of this sort of nature revolve around replacement of the gear selector rotating knob unit.

However, taking a further step back, not turning over is often an Earth issue so check all the earth straps. It’s increasingly common.

But based on the ‘not in park’ issue, buy best guess is as above.

Mechatronics units can fail, but they’re generally pretty reliable tbh.

The 8 speed wasn’t introduced until 2014, correct?

Easy big fella, the diesels got the 8 speed earlier I believe.
OP is located in Arizona, USA according to his profile. AFAIK, a diesel was never offered in USA for any year of LR4 production?

The diesel came to colonies with the LR5 - er, I mean "Discovery". Tidbit from 2016 timeframe:

It gets confusing when certain engines/options were not offered in some countries. We have the same problem over in the Mercedes universe.

Well, Bodsy is in the UK, so cut him some slack on knowing all the nuances of this wacky brand across the globe.

yeah guys...let's not beat up each other for doing the tl;dr move. These threads can drone on forever and a simple clarity of 6 or 8 speed around the world helps...I didn't know if the 8 was offered before 2014 and that info on the diesel is new to me. Take a breath and accept that nobody knows everything about these beasts around the world.

Totally agree. Now back to the OP's mechanic trying to lighten his wallet by $5k. I still don't think that is necessary.
