The way I check mine is to follow the instructions in the manual which is to wait 10 minutes. The gauge will read overfull if you have too much. Lots of people do it different ways, but I want my sump full at all times since I off-road a lot.

The engine may drink a surprising amount of oil too so careful of that, there isn't a low engine oil level light. In the Mohave mine hasn't used any all year going up and down 7% grades as part of a commute. But last summer in Utah I was topping it constantly and checking it often.

When I drained it I drained it completely….should I add a few more quarts?
No - do not overfill the oil.

8.5 is it unless you are leaking/burning oil.

It is possible the oil temperature and level sensor isn't working well so perhaps that is the problem.

All worth investigating...

Granted mine is the 3.0 SCV6... but it certainly does not drink oil.
There was a consumption of 1l/5000 km, until I had the PCV valve changed. Its all good now.

I just bought this vehicle from a guy. I went to change the oil and pulled out a total of 15 quarts of oil from the vehicle. How many quarts does this vehicle supposed to have? Everywhere I’ve read it takes 8.5 quarts but there was one website that says it takes 11.5 quarts. Please help!

15 quarts is insane… my guess is he either did an oil change and forgot to drain the oil (weird) or broken oil level sensor causing him to add absurd amounts and most likely bringing him to sell the car because he thought he was burning it.

Get an oil analysis to make sure the engine is healthy, monitor the oil sensor to make sure it is working properly, check voltage etc.

How does the engine run?

Not positive if the Land Rover oil gauge uses the same logic as the older Porsche gauges, however, my old 987.1 gauge functioned much the same way as the Land Rover gauge.

I write this because the entire displayed gauge on a Porsche represented 1-liter (or maybe quart) of oil and owners often misinterpreted this as down 1/4 on the gauge, I gotta add 1-liter of oil or maybe even 1/4 of the total oil capacity The point is, even if you are a bit low add ounces, not quarts and re-check; this should ensure you do not overfill when adding oil do to consumption etc.

My suspicion is the Land Rover oil gauge is essentially similar to the Porsche oil gauge representing one unit (liter / quart) of oil from empty to full on the display rather than reflecting the entire oil capacity on the display.

Regarding the electronic oil level indicator, even though there are 8 marks on the scale, judging from what happens when "topping-up", per the manual, it appears to represent only about a quart of oil.

The oil display will tell you how much oil to add if its low. The full scale does seem to be around 1 quart.

I think a lot of people go into the service menu after driving, and see the unavailable screen and panic and add oil... you just need to wait about 10-15 minutes after the engine is off to get a reading.

As many have said, correct fill level is 8.5 quarts or 9 liters for those outside the US. If I were you, I’d drain the oil, add exactly this amount, run the engine, then check the oil level after 10-15 minutes. If it reads low or minimum oil, then you know it’s a bad oil level sensor.
