400a fused burned - what could cause this?

figured out why the customer's car wasn't starting....400A fuse on the starter/alternator wire is burned....but now im trying to figure out what could have caused 400A in the first place.....is this something a shorted alternator could cause? any easy test? other than starting the car and seeing if it blows again?

Usually caused by a poor ground to the engine block.
