my other problem is that the front passager electric seat doesnt work properly, the back has no problem, the base wont move forward or back but it does move up and down, any ideas on this?

Knocking noise may be one of two or three things:

1. Oil pump tube is clogged or no longer connected (in oil pan)
2. Manifold may have a crack or bad exhaust gasket somewhere.
3. sludge starting to build up in engine and need a good flushing.

Electric seat may just be a bad switch, try to swap switches with the driver side and see if that fixes it. If it does, then buy new switch.

the car just came back from landrover 2 days ago with a service, and someone said it might be something inside the engine, but im temporarily in egypt, and i dont think they really know what theyre talking about, i know the oils been changed and so has the engine belt, so im thinking it might be the exhaust gasket, anyway i can check this without sending it back to landrover as i dont trust their technicians here,

As far as the seat switch goes, I just had that problem with the ex-wifes Disc I passanger seat. I took apart the switch (not wise) It came apart quickly with a lot of bearings and spring clips all over the place. Not much in side except those things. I got it back together in about 30 minutes and it worked fine. Maybe one of the bearings came loose and jamed it up, I don't know. It did save me $145.

i know this is a late reply but the cars been parked for a while and havent had a chance to look at it,

1. how do i check is the oil tube is clogged, and how do i located the right tube, as i think i remember seeing 2 tubes coming out the oil pan near the front of the vehicle,

2. whats the easiest way to check if the manifold is cracked or leaking, i know the engine bay seems to be quite hot when the vehicle is running, im not sure if this is normal or maybe a broken exhaust gasket letting the hot air into the engine bay

3. what can i use to flush the engine and where can i locate it, seeing that im in egypt anywhere that can send internationally would be good,

what affect would there be driving the vehicle with the knocking noise?

For the seat switch try spraying electrical parts cleaner into it without taking it apart. Worked for me.

To clean the oil intake you have to drop the pan. The screen at the base will be covered in sludge and gunk. My 97 Disco oil light would come on after driving on the highway for 10-20 minutes and I would hear the lifters tapping because the sludge build up was preventing oil from circulating properly. Once I cleand the intake and the pan (after flushing the engine) the problem went away.

Since you just had your oil changed, do you still get the knocking noise, or is it perhaps more like a tapping noise?

disco1, since i changed the oil, i put 20w-50 in because im in a hot country, the noise is more tapping now, than knocking, so im thinking its definately an oil problem, i want to drop the pan, but b4 doing that im trying to see if i can source a gasket locally or not, so that i dont end up stuck with a vehicle that i cant drive,

tommy33, nice tip for the seat problem ill give that a try soon, never thought of it, im thinking that there might not really be a problem with the switch bcuz the seat is at the furtherest back position so im guessing maybe something under it like the rod might have got disconnected or something,
