I own a 1999 disco 2...My current problem is that when I accelerate while in drive the engine begins to choke and it feels like it is going to die on me. Once I get around 2500 rpm it begins to feel fine, anything under that rpm the engine struggles. It has never died on me and I tried giving it a treatment of fuel injection cleaner, but it did not change much. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

First let me say I am sorry the forum gave you a hard time posting... I see the other 3 posts were the same, so I deleted them. (they required moderator approval for some reason).

issue will require more info:

Mileage, last tune up was done when?
What was done during the tune up? Type of plugs being used?
What maintenance has been done prior to this issue?
When did the issue begin?

Anything else will be good to help.

It has about 190000 miles and the last tune up was done 1 to 1.5 years ago. Changed the cords and replaced spark plugs to BOSCH Platinum 4's. Replaced the O2 sensors and changed the oil all at the same time. She then sat undriven for about 8 months because the rear air suspension went out, finally changed to rear coils system.

Once I started driving her after I changed out the suspension, she was good for about 1-2 months. Then within the last month she began to have the problem with the acceleration. I only drive a total of 5 miles to and from work everyday, and ever so often about the town.

She also recently had the three amigos go off but I am going to get the ABS amigo to pull those codes. I'm not sure if that is related.

If you have never changed the fuel pump, I would also check fuel pressure at the fuel rail... may be the pump on the way out.

I am fairly ignorant when it comes to my Disco, I am fairly comfortable with the basics…how can I check this? Is this some thing a mechanic needs to do (check fuel pressure at the fuel rail)?

I have read that it may be issues with the Stepper Motor? What are your thoughts?

We have had some weather change locally and I do notice that humid weather makes it worst. Also since this has all started my gas mileage has dropped significantly…is this related and/or does this help to diagnose this issue?

Off the subject, I have had the 3 amigos on my dash, but again I will be getting the ABS amigo to diagnose it, but I also have the red break light lit…what could be causing that?

this is just my opinion after working and assisting with Rover for almost 8 years.

Get rid of the Bosch plugs and get some champion platinum.

I would clean the MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow Sensor) in the hose between the air filter and the intake. Clean only when the engine hasn't been started in at least 30 minutes and only use MAF cleaner or a good electrical contact cleaner that states no residue.

I would check your brake fluid, sounds like it may be low.

If you want some help, send me your number and I'll be glad to call you on both issues.
Don't take it in to get the ABS codes read till we talk.

Can I get MAF cleaner at Autozone, Pep Boys, or O'Reily? Do you think that is what is causing the bad gas mileage?

Should I do anything with the Stepper Motor or any fuel pump parts?

Would the low break fluid be the cause the red light be on?

MAF cleaner at any of the listed places.

Yes it can cause bad fuel economy, it could also be bad injectors or just about a dozen other things... this is a cheap check and it is probably needed at 190,000 miles.

Low break fluid can cause the red light yes.

Thanks for all your advice so far.

I am going to work on her within the next few days. I bought the MAF cleaner and I will be doing that as well as checking/cleaning the stepper motor and changing to champion plugs…Any particular champion plugs? and do you have instructions/pictures on the location and how work with stepper motor?

I checked the Dot 4/Brake fluid and it is at normal level…what do you recommend be the next step?

I have been driving her more lately, realizing the gas consumption is really bad. She has bouts of good acceleration then bad, even past 2500 rpm as I previously mentioned. I read up some more on the forums…you suggested to another who had similar problem with their disco to change out to the fuel filter and run Seafoam…do you think this will help?

If so, how do I do this (Seafoam) and what size fuel filter/funnel do I get (large or medium)?
