any detailed instructions for changing oil & filter

Does anyone have any detailed instructions for changing oil and filter? What size wrench, drain plug, etc?

I did my oil change once and at that time, I had to put my LR3 up on ramps for the front. It's too dangerous to just put one side on jacks, plus it would be hard to remove all lug nuts that hold the skid plates from underneath. I also found out that I needed something that would hold the skid plate up while I was removing the last bolt (or have someone help, since the plate is darn heavy). I found that a mild crate, place under the skid plate would be enough to hold it up while I struggled to remove the last bolt. Once this is out of the way, it's pretty straight forward. The filter is clearly visible, and I used a filter removal tool that I got from the auto store (it was sized when I bought the filter) and I reused the drain plug without any problems of leakage.

That sounds easy. I always do my own oil changes. My sequoia uses a cartridge in a filter housing which is a pain to remove, not to mention a mess when draining.

Isn't the basic service schedule still covered for free over the 4/50000 on the '08? You could do mid-interval changes, but every 3750 is a bit overkill these days with synth oil and a good filter, IMHO.

According to dealer, included oil change is 7500 miles. Thats a bit much, even for synthetic, and especially when new breaking in.

Hardly. Good synth goes 10,000 in average conditions with a good filter. Sample and have your oil tested sometimes and you'll see. For dino oil, even, 5000 is fine.
Break in oil - I'm also old fashioned and would change it early (even at 1000) if I planned to keep a brand new car as long as you do, but I buy used and drive only so much before we sell. Even then, most engines will last 150,000 or more these days on the manufacturer's schedule. It ain't 1960 anymore.
Final thought, I don't bother getting dirty when I get dealer coupons for $30 oil changes (provided I supply the synth oil rather than pay the upgrade). I can also pay the local shop less labor charge than that if I provide parts. I know for some, wrenching is a passion, but not for me!

With most manufactures (i'm not positive land rover does this) they put additives in the oil to aid with break-in, therefore you should not change the oil too early. The filter would collect anything large enough to cause damage to the engine. I agree that waiting to 7500 sounds like too much for breaking-in, I would do a change around 2k. From then on, 7500 is fine for average street driving, but if you tow, race, and especially off-road, then you should do changes much more frequently.

I've got no problem with the engine lasting that long, but some of the filter's I've seen are already wearing down at 7500miles... I usually swap between 6k & 8k miles on each of my vehicles (both the Mini and BMW are 15k miles before scheduled! )...
