Black trim

Hi all. I've searched the forum and couldn't find any answers to this question. I just bought an 01 Disco, and the black trim around the wheel wells is not only fading, but it has a weird texture. I bought Mother's Back to Black to try and get it looking good, but the texture makes it difficult to clean. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, is there a solution to making those look better?

It is cheap plastic, lightly sand, then either paint it or use your favorite black product to cover.
