We've owned over a half dozen suvs driven in Northeast winters and this is first time we've had this issue. We do underside wash about once a month in winter. This may be a problem with caliper design. I need to take truck in for service and may pay Topix fee to access tsb's before I go in and see if there is one for caliper sticking.

The winch is easily dissembled. You could have fixed it in about 10 mins.

For brakes it is a good idea to clean and lube the pins any time the wheels are off. Mine get done spring/fall when I am swapping the winter and summer tires.

Yeah, we’ve lived in Vermont for almost 40 years and never had this problem with any previous vehicle. I guess that’s why I didn’t think of it at first.
I just drove down to NYC and I think my gas mileage is better by a couple miles/gal but it’s not a fair test since part of the trip was thru snow and then highway slush. I’ll be able to tell better on the way back when, hopefully, the roads will be dry.

Update: took the LR4 into my shop and the previous owner did some damage to the exhaust and gas tank. The exhaust was cracked at the front of the vehicle very close to where the AC intake is located which was bringing in the exhaust odor when AC was on "fresh air".

I don't have an estimate to repair but I'm expecting a couple Grand to fix all issues on the underside.

I was really hoping the first money I spend on the truck would be rods tires and wheels but you know, priorities.

Yikes, glad you got that diagnosed and have a repair plan sooner rather than later.

When you have a chance, can you send us a pic or 2 of the damage? Where did you buy the car from? If you bought it from a dealer, I would make them pay to have it fixed.

Pre Purchase Inspection on a vehicle from a private seller for $250 on any high $ used vehicle seems like a great idea after seeing this.

    Sorry to hear bucwolfser.

I'll send pics when I take it back in to have the work done, I'm hoping later this week.

I bought it cash from an individual.

I got the quote back for repairs.... Not good.

CV joint repair, New gas tank/skid plates/exhaust

    $2900

If we can source a used tank, it will lower the price several hundred dollars.

I'm taking it in next week and will snap some pics when we get it in the air.

Getting back to the burning smell and dragging brake issue, my average mpg is up about 2mpg since I had all four brakes fixed. I might be imagining it, but the vehicle feels different.

This is based on two more tankfuls of gas.

Any more info on a tsb? Would the dealer service dept know?

Just to follow up, here is what the underbelly looks like. Cracked exhaust, bent gas tank and a picture of the drive shaft which was being rubbed by the bent gas tank. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
