Is it possible to make my 97 Disco a 2WD?

Here's the scoop, I live in Northern Virginia and onlly need 4WD once or twice a year, and not really even then. I know it's crazy, but I'm curious.

Technically your Rover is 1 wheel drive, or all-wheel drive depends on how you want to state it.

if one wheel spins you are stuck, unless you push the brake in or lock the center diff.

But to remove a drive shaft will require you to lock the center diff in all the time... this actually puts more load on the engine and will burn more fuel.

pull the front driveshaft off and voila 2wd. Don't see an advantage though. And those one or 2 days you want 4wd it'll be way inconvient to put the driveshaft back on. The transfer case is a "full time" 4wd. If you want selectable 2wd then you'll need a new transfercase and then the front diff and driveshaft would still spin (like the jeep cherokee's do). To get that all to stop spinning you'll need hubs that can unlock so that means a new front axle. Guess you could start with that......At any rate I'm sure you've decided it is not worth the bother . Easier to just get a 2wd vehicle.

People have done it with transfer case and hub mods, but the cost would far outweigh the benefit of any fuel savings.
I'd say just sell the Disco and get a 2WD car/truck/SUV if you don't ever need 4WD.
