you know, I suggested this to the service guys, and basically they were very reluctant to try this simple, yet definitive test. They talked about it as a last resort. But they did want to try all sorts of other things, like tape up the windows and such...

I'll be taking the crossbars off this weekend.

Then, if it truly is the crossbars, I'll have to decide how much it bothers me and whether the VELCRO idea recently posted is worth my time.
