Well, I have had the truck for three months and it left me stuck already. Bummed. Oh well I knew it when I bought it. 95 disco 1 76,000 miles owned by a beverly hills old lady!

So on to the issue; highway speed I started to smell oil. Truck felt fine. I look in the rear view and sure enough it is smoking pretty badly. I make my way off the freeway and did not quite make it into a driveway before the truck sounded like it was in neutral. I even tried the lockers. Now here is the rub there is so much oil (atf?) on the ground it is amazing. I should have called hazmat. the engine sounds great! revs right up but goes nowhere. I have not yet gotten back to my lady friends house to see where the oil was coming from yet.

Anyone here have any ideas?

THANKS!

Sounds like the transmission needs to be replaced... if you ran it out of fluid while driving it will be toast.

Gonna cost a bundle - for hazmat to evacuate the area, rip up all the ground to 6 feet deep and dispose of the biohazard your rover caused, not to mention the lab analysis of the soil and the general health survey of the population that was exposed- could be $250 to $500k. Oh and a couple grand for a rebuilt tranny ;)

I had to replace the torque convertor recently almost same scenario but mine didn't smoke or leak, it just snapped and stopped working. the tranny fluid was fried though, so it was probably working up to it for a while. Approximately same mileage too...

Maybe just a hose?

I am hopeing that it is just a oil cooler hose. I am pretty sure I did not run it dry although it did about two little surges before I got it stopped. I really hope the tranny is not fried! It should (in my mind) freeze up if run dry. It was still rolling pretty easy and not making any evil noises.

The timeing is awfull. I am in the middle of opening a new hot air balloon ride company and poor!

My transmisson was leaking alot of fluid and it wouldn't move cause transmission fluid was to low but once i got the transmission flushed and refilled its was working great and is still working with no problems and my disco has 66000+ miles on it. My Fiance and i got lucky my you will too.

Thanks!

I appreciate the words of encouragment! I looked through 100's of posts on this and one other board trying to find someone who had a similar problem. I did not find anything that was giving me a warm fuzzy feeling...................

Cool thing is I learned about a couple of my other minor issues in the meantime.

Got the problem fixed! Lower oil cooler line came off the darn fitting. * quarts of oil later it works perfect. Now I have a brake issue! This thing is as much maintainance as my old Pinzgauer. But I still am developing a sweet spot for the old gal.
