Please help ! I would like to fix this problem with the clock or get a cheaper replacement than R1800.00 (South African Rand) or more or less $180.00.
The display segments are is partially dead.
Can it be the background lamp or do I have to replace the whole clock unit ?
Thank you.

If partially dead, you need to replace the whole unit... might I suggest getting a used one from a junk (salvage) yard.
