So randomly out of the blue half way through my fuel tank, an error pops up and it says something about the fuel cap is not on correctly. Has anyone had this error message?

Should I be worried?

Thanks!

I've had it pop up and ultimately took it as a sign to replace the battery because I didn't know if it had ever been done before. This was about a year ago at around 70k miles. FYI it has come up a few times since then and I've just learned to live with it. I have read here that the fuel additives can eat away at the gas cap seal and the replacement cap can probably be bought at Atlantic British.

Awesome! Thanks y'all! I wasn't overly concerned because it comes and goes and I have checked it over and over, but I just wanted to get some advice.

Usually not the gas cap.

That message is there and designed to come up when an EVAP system leak check fails, as a precursor to turning on the MIL, just in case the gas cap has been left off/loose. There was a software update to essentially turn that message on on the earlier vehicles, due to the number of MIL lights that LR warranty was paying for diagnosis of, when there was no fault other then the cap being left loose.

There have been several different issues with the LR3 EVAP system, and the gas cap is towards the end of the list.

So what would you suggest then? Take it to a dealer to get it diagnosed?

Dealer or an indy shop that knows these vehicles.

Other then that it is a complete guess at what part to replace.

If the seal on the gas cap is torn, or it is not properly ratcheting, then replace it.

Most common failure to throw a large EVAP leak(P0455) is the DMTL pump.

Most common failures to throw a small leak(P0442) are a sticking purge valve, and a torn fuel pump seal.

There are also several other seals and connections that can fail and cause a leak, including wiring issues to the change over valve(part of the DMTL pump)

But yes, diagnosis is the correct step here, if nothing else, have the code read to see if it is a fine or gross leak.

Thanks! I'm here in San Antonio, so I will try to find a good Indy shop. I've read too much about dealers on here to feel like I can trust them implicitly.

Hopefully it's nothing big. I've had this LR3 for 4 months now and loved every minute of it!

To fully test this system, specialized LR specific diagnostic equipment is needed(many off brand ones, not just the dealer stuff)

But even if you go to the dealer for the diagnosis, ask them for a print out of three things for this fault.

1. A complete print out of faults, both related and unrelated.
2. A print out from the results of the DMTL(Fuel Leak Check) test.
3. A print out of your adaptive fuel trims(long term and sub-feedback)

The dealer equipment can do all three, and takes about an additional 2 minutes to pull it all(which should be done as part of the diag process they're already doing) but some of the off brand equipment(even the good ones like AutoLogic) does not have access to the adaptive fuel trims.

Even the dealers have incorrect diags pretty often for these faults, but with those three print outs, you can either pinpoint the failure, or at the very least, rule out some of the common issues.
