I have a '97 disco; we replaced the fuel pump in August it ran great (although it made a loud humming noise unlike the previous one) until Dec., drove to the store went out to start it and no loud humming noise and it wouldn't start. Replaced the pump with a refurbished pump (still made a loud humming noise) and again it ran great, for 2 days, then began flooding at speeds over 30 mph or if you tried to take off really fast. By the next day it wouldn't start it acted as if it wasn't getting enough fuel. Changed the filter and it started and ran well for about 20 minutes and everything started happening again (flooding or lagging, and not starting again). Changed the pump again assuming that it was a bad pump (although you could still hear it humming) and the new pump (a warranty replacement that had a very quiet hum and still does) again ran great for about a day, then all the same symptoms again, and now does not start??? Does anyone have any idea what is happening? This should be a Series I and has 117,000 miles

Humming sound doesn't sound good, could be a bad connections causing a loss in power or the one of you lines could be clogged... have you check the fuel pressure at the rail in the engine bay?

No, have not checked pressure I have several friends that have the equipment however, have to get it running to take it in. The pre-August pump made very little noise, the next two made alot of noise and the current pump sounds like the pre-August pump (sounds normal, I agree that the other two were probably bad rebuilds but this one sounds right).

Any ideas on checking for a clogged fuel line? What equip do I need to check pressure at home? I could pull fuel line at the filter to make sure that there is pressure.

Ok, I took a tire gauge and hooked it up to the rail, I have 18 lbs pressure while turning it over it did eventually start and started shooting fuel out of the gauge. However, it immediately stalled after removing the foot from the gas. what is the pressure suppossed to be at???? I heard somewhere 40 psi? is a tire guage going to be accurate (it is the type with the hose and guage at the end)?

Fuel pressure regulator, clogged line or the pump is not working correctly.
