Hi Jason! I know that you said you changed your fuel filter, but you didn't say whether you ran some fuel through the fuel line before you installed the new filter.
Now, lets revisit the original problem. It would seem reasonable logical that if you vehicle was running OK prior to running out of petrol (and probable clogged up the works) that you still have a fuel problem, therefore, before you look elsewhere, check out your fuel system.

Jason, I had a similar problem and I found out it was the Throttle Position sensor.
It would lose power when the accelerator pedal was at a certain position - hence certain speed. I didnt always get the Check Engine light, only sometimes.
|I have to say though that I'm guessing that your Disco runs on petrol (mine's a diesel) so I'm not really sure if the TPS is installed on petrol models.

Case 1. When the hesitation started on my 98 Disco, I dropped to below 50 and then shifted to third. Problem goes away. So I suspected the VSS.

Case 2. I have suspected the TPS, since it would occur while traveling over a bridge or hill where the engine is trying to compensate for the upward chug. So I backed off of the accelerator and the problem goes away. So I suspected the TPS.

Case 3. Now for the fuel question&answer: Cleaned, cleaned, and cleaned the system with various fuel system cleaners. Rover runs fine, then one or the other case would occur and I am back to hestitation. So I suspected the fuel filter but have rejected the fuel filter since case 1 and case 2 are dependent on computer inputs. I have never replaced the fuel filter, nor do I suspect it is the fuel system.

Case 4. Humidity or rain. The hesitation is more likely to occur when it is extremely humid or while driving in the rain for any length of time. But once, it did hesitate when it was not humid nor raining, but at the beginning of trying to identify the problem.

Bought in May 2004 and saved its life from the previous owner.

So which is it?

VSS or TPS or Fuel or Moisture?

It is mot moisture unless it is related to a bad connection getting wet. Moisture in the air will improve the power output of the engine.

I understand that moisture helps the engine, but not the electrical. So, since the TPS is inside the engine compartment, the chances of water moisture getting to the TPS would be small. However, the VSS is vulnerable to getting wet and could then be the source of the hesitation. I reject the fuel scenario because I have not yet determined whether water moisture could get into a system that is not leaking.

Therefore, could I conclude that the VSS has a bad connection? And is the VSS the source of the hesitation we are writing about?
