Have you tried taking the key w/ you in a waterproof container? WHen I windsurf, I bring my car key w/ me in a small waterproof bag which is tied to my safety whistle in the pocket of my PFD. Makes it very difficult to fall/slip out, and the line on the whistle is long enough that I don't have to untie it when taking a break between sessions.

Hate to be the negative guy but, how about just not forgetting to lock your key in your truck? I mean, I've been driving for almost 20 years and have only locked my key in my car once and that was my wife's fault (at least that's MY story). I understand your frustration but blaming it on LR is a bit excessive. LR isn't the only manufacturer who has designed their vehicle to only take a larger fob. Ever own a Saab? And with Saab, you think you've got OnStar but OnStar on a Saab doesn't open your doors. They say you can't lock your key in your car so they didn't enable that. This isn't true. I haven't done it with mine but I know how to do it.

Anyway, it's not a design problem with the truck. Sorry to not feel sorry for you.

What? Did you even read the post? I'm not talking about you nor is anyone asking for your pity, I'm talking about me! I started the post stating that I'll lock keys in there a couple times a year, got a hide-a-key, no more problem. For whatever the reason, it happens to people (even people with well over 20 years of driving experience!!!), I'm looking for an easier way around it then "just don't do it!" Thanks for the great advice and well wishes!

And there is a design issue when your only option for a spare key is another $200+ FOB! That *is* a bad design! Sorry, but for LR or any companies that do this with no other option its a PITA!

Tim,
The Audi Fob is similar (I have an A6 4.2), but Audi supplies a thin key to keep in your wallet (or wherever) for these exact circumstances.

Didn't know that about the Audi but makes sense. BMW does the same.

The key itself looks like it can be removed from the fob with a super dooper small screwdriver of some sorts. But Im still absolutely freakin' terrified of losing the key while camping or clubbing. That master lock thingy is looking mighty nice.

When I originally purchased last winter I was told by my dealer that a valet key could be made. I have not attempted to have one made yet, so it may just be more LR misinformation.

Yeah, my dealer told me repeatedly that no valet key could be made as they had done for Freelanders and previous LRs. They said they discontinued giving the plastic wallet keys because too many broke off in locks and caused more problems. I'm hoping "no valet keys" is the misinformation, though. From looking at the key, it isn't actually anything special. Should be able to be milled. Once inside, if you have a spare FOB stashed, you could then start the car.

I'd rather well hide a FOB inside the car and keep a cheap outline key on the external frame! Let's hope you're right (Joe) and I'm wrong!

The keys fit nicely behind the gas tank cover, but obviously not a safe spot.

Just wanted to pop up an old thread...I have a sand casted mold of my key...works great! You can go to any fabrication shop and get one made for around $70-$100. You could also get a CNC milled one if you have good connections in the machining industry.
