take your key in with you... there's a reason LR made it waterproof......

sand and saltwater rinse off easily with fresh water.

Point well taken but it was nice not having to worry about stuffing the key in my wetsuit or sticking it under the bumper while surfing this morning. Plus when I bought the hitch safe I did not know it wouldn't fit or that the key was waterproof so it became a challenge once I was stuck w/ it.

Lock Out

Hi,

My wife some how locked the keys in the our 06' LR3 one night after she got home from work. We called serveral "AAA" type towing and service companies claiming that it is very difficult to get into the newer type Land Rovers. So to say the least we were declined for service and was suggested we call a lock smith or LR for a new key. Our neighbor (he works for a towing co.) happened to walk by our house and saw that we were trying to get into the car. Long story short: he used a pressure cuff - like the one you use to take your blood pressure and was able to pry the upper corner of the driver side door to get something in to unlock the door. He said that how LR suggests to get into their trucks. He was spot on, I called the LR the next day and they told me the same thing. All is well nothing was damged during the pry and unlock process. Hope this helps.

Damn...I just noticed folks replying to this 4 year old post of mine and had hoped that, by now, there was a safe key storage solution for the LR3! No dice.

As mentioned earlier, it is obvious that we can bring this key in the water, but we're talking about a $350+ key if you lose it. I'd rather not bring it in with me and when the water is warm and I'm not wearing a wetsuit, there are even less places to stash it. I wouldn't trust it in a board shorts pocket even with the little bungee holding it in there.

Chuck, I'll keep my eye out for an LR3 flying a parafoil whenever I'm down there. This year, other than weekend trips I'll be there the end of April and Labor Day week. Looking forward to getting the rover back out on the sand...and of course doing some kitesurfing. ;)

If you have found some key storage/safe solutions not discussed here, please share them! Heck, even if you want to PM me a good hiding spot you have identified I would greatly appreciate it.

boardies pockets are pretty superior nowadays... the bungee and clip along with a zippered pocket are TOTALLY secure enough to not even pay mind to your key. Unless you plan on getting raked over the reef like 5 times or getting into a bite fight with a shark, I'd bet my whole truck on that key staying put.

Invest in a good pair of boardies like these with the Bungee/Clip and a watertight zippered pocket....

I know we're getting off topic here, but seriously...$65 for boardshorts? They better COME with a key fob already in the pocket!!! LOL

I hear you on the bungees, though. But I still would rather leave it secured (locked) on my car somewhere. With kitesurfing we go on long downwinders and it is always good to leave the key where your friends know how to find it. You never know when somebody is going to have to get your vehicle to rescue your own ass! ;)
