IPOD...not getting much volume question

My LR3 has the ipod thing on the console (don't ask me why it's facing the back seat, as wouldn't they want their customers to be sticking their ipod cable into the area near the stereo??). Anyway, the cable I bought at the apple store works fine, but I've noticed I have to crank my volume to 30 on the stereo to hear the aux/ipod. Is this the case with everyone else's lr3 or just mine?

Yes, normal -- the flaw being the LR head unit has no volume offset setting. Using the line-out of the iPod (via the dock connector) helps a bit. Use search; many comments/solutions.

It is also the same problem with a DVD, which also uses the AUX connection. When the passengers watch a movie, I need to crank up the volume and turn off voice guidance. Otherwise, everyone will go deaf when the voice guidance kicks in. The lowest volume offset of the navigation is +8.

My dealer tried to fix it with a software update of the radio and a replacement of the navigation screen. It seems to have improved, but I haven't really tried it yet.

Another option is an inline amplifier.

I've seen this issue posted before, but I have had no problem using the iPod line out (with a Belkin cable) and get normal volume output levels. i.e switch from FM to CD to AUX (iPod) and don't need to adjust the volume, it is the same loudness for all.

You should be able to listen to your IPOD at volume setting of 20-23...check that your IPOD is actually set to full volume output, and that your line doesn't have a volume adjuster set to low...

at 30 the volume should blow you out of your seat...

I guess it depends on your content.

My self ripped audio files are about 6 volume ticks lower in volume on iPod+AUX than playing the same CD directly on the head unit. The same is true on all LR3/RRS I've tried.

You can jack the volume on the files in iTunes to compensate a bit... but it will introduce distortion if your tracks are already at the top of their dynamic range. (Of course, with most modern recordings... you probably couldn't tell... they're all overcompressed/clipped.)

Good point Grommet...all of the tunes I have on the IPOD are downloaded from Itunes or from original CD's...
