Hey everyone. Been reading these forums for a while but have not posted yet.

I have a 2010 Land Rover with 75,000 miles on it. Auto shop says I need a new fan clutch and total is going to cost me $1,450!

Here's my issue, I had a restricted performance message come on during a 5 hour drive to Edmonton. It came on 4 hours into the drive. nearly the entire drive had been through very heavy rainfall. A restricted performance message came on, I hit ok. It disappeared after a few minutes. This continued for the rest of the trip where it would come on for a few mins and turn off after a few more.

Fast forward to the next day and the engine light came on, along side with the restricted performance message being on permanently.

Scanned the code when I got home. The code that came up when I scanned it is p0480 fan cooler. I took it Into a shop (not Land Rover, I live 2 hours away from one) and they said I need a new fan clutch and the part costs $1200. This seems ridiculous to me but I am having trouble finding any parts online. I'm hoping someone else might have had an experience with this issue.

From the little information I've seen on this restricted performance, it sounds like it can be as simple as a bad connector..

If it is in fact the fan clutch, would anyone have an idea where I could get one for under $1200? I would appreciate it greatly.

Besides the error code, what other symptom are you seeing?

Fan running constantly? Fan runs too fast?
Fan doesn't run at all?
Is the fan spinning freely when the engine is off?

Hey RBA thanks for the reply.

I will go take a look at that right away. As far as just driving it goes I haven't noticed any difference.

I'm not sure what the normal speed of the fan is so that will be hard to determine but I will check if it spins freely when I shut the engine down.

As far as I can tell, everything seems normal. The fan starts up with the truck, appears to be running the same speed as the belt is going. When shutting engine off the fan stops turning with everything else

Is it moving freely when the engine is off?

If it is, then I would reset and clear the code and see if it pops back up.

No free movement when the engine is off. the fan stops spinning with the other components. This is normal correct?

I tried clearing the codes twice and both times it comes right back.

So lets be specific here.

Your engine is off, you opened the hood, took the engine cover off, and tried to spin the fan with your hand and it won't move. So no free movement in the fan...

If that is true, then yes your fan clutch is toast and you need to replace.

Could simply be something wet in the wiring harness (considering the condition started while you were driving in heavy rain, how long ago did that happen?), which the ECM detects and reports as a fault of either a circuit short to ground or to the battery, or as an open circuit. You or your shop should check conditions of the wiring harnesses between engine control module and fan control module / fly lead, clean and dry all connectors verifying they aren't damaged, reconnect, clear the DTCs again and retest.

Issue with fan clutch? "Restricted performance" please help

thanks Umbertob. It happened two weeks ago, so lots of time for it to dry up but I will check it out. I do find it strange how it happened when driving through the rain. Enough rain to cause poor visibility.

If I were to look for damaged connectors would that be corrosion? Or is there something else I should look out for.

Thanks for the reply
