Kayak Tie-Down

I've got a 16' foot kayak I'll be trying to tie-down to my LR3 tomorrow. Given the short roof rack tracks the bow of my kayak comes up short of my front bumper. The bow tie-down will be somewhere over the hood. I need a bow tie-down point on the car. I was hoping I would be able to die under the front bumper, but the roof racks are just too far back on the roof.

Has anyone come up with a good tie-down point mid hood?

I guess you've figured something out by now, but couldn't you just bring the tie-down over the hood and grill with a bit of padding and use the front tow loop?
