I would hardly call this a safety issue worthy of a recall on a 17 year old vehicle. Even one rear gas strut working should have resulted in a 'controlled' descent rather than a 'crashing down'. I replace the hood and tailgate struts probably around every 10 years when they no longer positively hold open.
