After multiple failed attempts to externally seal the old pump on my 2010 LR4 (125kmi), I gave up and replaced it with the new style pump. The first re-seal attempt was at 121kmi, I applied replaced the gasket/seal to the block (it was fine), and applied a bead of sealant around the edge of the pump body. This slowed the leak but didn't cure it. At the 125k oil change I tried again, this time letting the pump sit overnight on the workbench to let the sealant fully cure before re-installing. Again, it slowed the leak further, but didn't stop it entirely. This is when I threw in the towel and shelled out the ~$200 for a new pump & bolts. I hate oil leaks.

The FSM implies the oil sump must be drained, but this is not entirely accurate. I learned that with the oil sump filled, and the truck level, when the pump is removed oil WILL start to flow out. Another forum member mentioned it might be 1-2 pints lost. I decided to lift the front only to tilt the truck. In off-road mode, with the rear tire on the ground and both front tires ~8 inches off the ground, no oil came out when the pump was removed. Alternately, replace the pump when changing the oil so the sump is empty. I had just changed the oil 500 miles ago along with my final attempt to re-seal the old pump, and didn't want to wait for the next oil change at 130k.

New pump part number = LR082226 (Pierburg 7.01188.22.0), ~$475 MSRP at the dealer, $200-$220 for Pierburg from aftermarket vendors (RM European, etc). The new pump comes with a new seal.


The new-style pump also requires longer bolts, LR060479, about 20mm longer than the old/original bolts (45mm vs 65mm). The new bolt has a hex head, the old bolt has a Torx head. Two bolts are required.

R&R is straightforward, cleaning up the mess is slow & tedious. Make sure the new pump is rotated to the same position as the old pump before installing, and it should easily slide into place. Torque to spec and that's it.

The old pump design is, IMO, pretty terrible. Pierburg ME's should be ashamed of themselves. I took the old one apart and will get photos of it. There's a thin gasket sealing the outer stamped-steel cover to the pump body, and the gasket is not replaceable. After seeing the design, I would definitely recommend upgrading to the new style pump if your LR4 has the old style pump.

There are many design differences between the old & new pump, most importantly it has an improved design for the housing/cover, and 5 bolts clamping the new flat cover vs 4 bolts clamping the old can-style cover.

Photos of the new Pierburg pump, which I think has a second label/sticker covering where the lower sticker may have the Land Rover logo.

Great pics, thanks for sharing. Any idea what model years got the newer pump vs older? was there a cutover?
I am not sure if/when the new style went into production from the factory. If some owners would take a look with a flashlight under the hood (pretty easy to see), that might help narrow it down.

2015 LR4 SCV6, 90k miles - old style vac pump and is leaking oil too. Not much, barely noticeable leak, so I decided to just leave it alone (being an ex subaru owner I always called such leaks "rust protection coating" here in new england)

Thanks, @Arman! If they were still using the old style for 2015 model year, that means most of production originally came with the old style...

Agree with the OP. I also had an oil leak around the vacuum pump, and multiple attempts to re-seal with a new OEM seal, new bolts, etc all failed. The only solution that worked was a new-style pump.

@gsxr Thanks for the part numbers. Mine is coated with oil, but luckily there's not drip per se. I'll have to do this soon, been holding off for ever as well.

Photos of the internals under the cover, of the old style pump. Note the very thin seal ring. This is the root cause of the oil leaks. The seal is not sold separately, and given the design of the pump, I wouldn't want to risk attempting to remove the cover and use RTV-type sealant instead.
