Nokian now has a 255/55/19 tire

the WR G2.

I have the synchrones and love them, but would probably have gone for the nokians if they were available when i swapped out my goodyears a few years back. The "all-weather" nokians are tough to beat

I have nokian WR's on my 540 sport and leave them on year-round, great tire under all conditions

I'm surprised I haven't heard about this brand, Nokian, before? I'm no afficianado, but its been under the radar for me. How do they compare to the Synchrones in terms of wear, speed rating, and road noise?

Here is a write-up on the company website with a good picture of the tire. Doesn't look all that more aggressive than either of the Michelins, actually;
Nokian WRG2 SUV

This is another SUV tire they have which comes up in our size;
The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R SUV

So, it looks like we FINALLY have some decent options in the 19" size!

To date, I've only known about the;
  • GY Wrangler HPs - Factory tire, lumpy, noisy, wears fast.
  • Pirelli Scorpians - Very well reviewed, wears fast.
  • Michelin Synchrones - Best choice to date, great tire.

Toyo and Bridgestone also offer 19" tires for HSE. Nokian's importance is that it makes tires with the "servere service" symbol - the mountain snowflake - rated for winter use, but these tires (WR) also work year-round. Most severe service or winter tires are not designed for summer temps, wearing faster and performing worse than 3 season tires during warm conditions. Nokian's WR is a fantastic tire in snow and ice (had some on the allroad) and suitable for highway use all other times. Not offroad rated.

Can't say enough about Nokians

Hands down, best all around tire I've ever had. They have steadily improved their summer/normal condition performance to compliment their exceptional winter performance. They have also become increasingly quiet and smooth (I've had three generations of the WR). Tread wear is excellent.

The only thing I can't speak to is offroad capability (i've only had them on my bimmers, first a 330i, now a 540i). On my 330, i used to run Michelin Pilots in the summer and Nokian NRWs (precursor of WR) in the winter on a different set of rims, then realized I was too old to be swapping rims every winter and that the NRW performance was actually pretty darn good in the summer. So just decided to leave them on year round.

I have the 255/55/19 Synchrones on my LR3 and have taken it offroad at a LR driving experience - - they held up well. Also does well in normal and winter conditions.

But if I keep the LR3 long enough to need a new set of tires, I will be going to Nokians....
